Thread: What Did You Do Today (2016) |

You lot of sick'os remind me of a poem I had to recite at a charity event one night. Took me ages to learn but once learned I have never forgotten it Won't bore you with it all but some may remember the great Stanley Holloway:-
I've been very poorly, but now I feel fine. I went out yesterday for the very first time. I felt like a lad as i strode down the road. Then up came old Jones & he said " Well I am blowed" "My word you do look queer, My word you do look queer" I said " Don't say that , Its true I've been ill" He said " I glad you are better but still, I wish there was a thousand for me in your will" My word you do look queer. My word you do look queer"

Sam "Spent the last couple of days emailing and telephoning Macc models "
Ok. I made the comment because many people just send an email & then complain of no reply. My experience of emails is that they often get lost in the wash & a simple phone call often solves the problem. Clearly, in this case, that did not work either |

Just sailed the boat back from a 34 day holiday in belgium including an 8 day cruise into Holland to Middleburgh, Veere, Zerikzee & Breskens. Whilst model engineering one often gets a minor burn from hot metal, solder etc. I had a slightly different burn. Whilst sailing in the Veersemere we hoisted the cruising chute which is 64 M2 ( enough to carpet a small single bed flat !!!). A Gust of wind hit us & my crew was helming. He should have turned down wind to make the boat more stable but being inexperienced he did not we took the wind broadside & the decks went awash so I had to let the sheets off a bit sharpish as he started to panic. Unfortunately I slipped & having no lifejacket & not being clipped on i found it difficult to let go of the rope quick enough. In the split second it ran through my hand I had a rope burn & the picture shows the result. I have been sailing for years & have always managed to avoid this. Not this time. They have started to heal fairly quickly & this photo is taken 7 days after the event The trip back started Ok with a lovely 7kt reach in warm sunshine but the forecast 5-10 kts winds from the Longsand head along the Gunfleet windfarm turned into 20-30kts on the nose & we had 2metre swell & breaking seas for 9 hours. We arrived at Bradwell creek in the pitch black at 03-00 hours after 17 hours totally knackered. They view of the stars at night was great & we did see a few shooting stars. Overall a great holiday & the end to 11 weeks of cruising for me which has included the Channel islands Normandy & as far as Treguier So now I am back to my workshop & a bit of model making. Will it hurt if I get swarf in the cuts???????

Applogies for going off thread here but it is being suggested that running slow puts a higher load on a variable speed motor- is that correct? No its fine to do that, its continued running at low speeds under load that causes overheating because the fan barely works at low speeds. Neil Thanks |
Thread: Tidal power getting going in the UK |

Hydro electric usually runs on fresh water so the turbine blades have a different marine growth to deal with & i believe that they run quite fast thus throwing anything off before it can fasten itself to the blade What will be a problem with tidal systems is the gradual build up of marine growth. These turbines run fairly slow so will not shed the slime etc once weed gets a foot hold it will greatly affect performance. This will happen mostly during neap tides. There are no antifoulling systems currently invented that are safe for the environment that can be used & whilst the designers may have considered this i am sure it will be a major problem

Applogies for going off thread here but it is being suggested that running slow puts a higher load on a variable speed motor- is that correct? I ask because on my warco 250mv i usually start on slow speed, build up to speed i want then start the cut. It would seem from the comments above that may not be a good thing on variable speed lathes and that having selected a speed i should stay with it & not keep going back to slow speed and back up again every time i stop Edited By Sam Longley 1 on 30/08/2016 07:51:18 |

Sam, I was taught by my former employer's IT chief that writing e-mails in upper case was rude. Mind you, as a deaf old git myself, 72 point lower case might be handy... I always thought it was meant to indicate shouting!! But clearly the joke has fallen on deaf ears |

Something that should be banned - large HGV's running on their speed limiter and overtaking others doing the same on dual carriage ways and motor ways. We would all get there a lot quicker if they stopped this and use less fuel. It seems that they should drive to a 10 second rule - if overtaking takes longer don't.
John - Can you imagine the carnage as they all drove aroung holding their iphones up in front of their faces with the latest app showing a 10 second stop watch as they overtook & videoing it on facebook/twitter as they did it to tell their friends that they had just scored 14889 points in an overtaking manover Edited By Sam Longley 1 on 22/08/2016 11:49:35 |

I am fully aware that many of the energy forms I quoted are not 'green' but the point I was making was that there is widespread 'support' of green energy (and we all need energy) but there appears to be equal oppostion to any form of energy production. I was saying to my son the other day I wish I had some of the mentality I had when I was a teenager, the bit that enables you to sail through life without being irritated by:- loud music, garden fires, barking dogs, people who can't drive, 'sophisticated' people who are extremely stupid........... Bill D. Now you are just being b..y sensible. Have to stop that at once Edited By Sam Longley 1 on 22/08/2016 07:59:26 |

Ban HGV's between 1 am and 11pm. How would they deliver your 12 mm milling cutter with their 40 ft artic down your street other than between 11pm &. 1 am when all the cars are parked in it? Then knock you up at midnight to sign for it . Then knock you up to collect it when you find they have sent half inch not 12mm Edited By Sam Longley 1 on 22/08/2016 07:58:11 |

I want to impose a ten thousand pine fine for any cyclists riding two abreast on the public higfhway and a twent thousand pound fine for horse riders doing the same. They might currently have the right to do so (sadly both do) but that doesnt mean thats its a safe thing to do. Have you considered the practice perfectly safe but that it might just be the moronic drivers who are not safe. Mind you i do sometimes wonder why horse riders cannot just go & gallop round a field instead Edited By Sam Longley 1 on 21/08/2016 20:25:15 |

Why would that help Plod ? Make more law abiding citizens stay in so the dossers can go out thieving in the dark ? Yer, I'll vote for that. -- NOT They could do a SAS on everybody they saw out and about without a light and if all law abiding people stopped in they would know that any one who was out and about could be up to no good.John - Edited By Ajohnw on 21/08/2016 16:59:46 That is a good idea --- a curfew--- nothing like a good old fashioned police state mr Putin, If we had this police state would we still be allowed this forum or would the moderators chop our hands off first & ban women from looking at computers |

Having had a joinery business for 25 years i used most of the many machines myself but the one i hated was the spindle moulder. These can be bought as part of universal woodworker machines or even stand alone ones for hobby use & unless training is given they are extremely dangerous. I saw my fathers foreman loose 3 fingers & it was horendous. I employed several machinists who had lost digits in saws & spindle moulders Spindle moulders should not be sold without evidence of training Edited By Sam Longley 1 on 21/08/2016 07:48:50 |

Years ago my father won a contract for the bata shoe factory in tilbury to renew the steel supporting the asbestos roof over their chromadising plant. The steel purlins had corroded due to acid fumes & had to be replaced so contract was to replace the steel. They thought he would also replace the roof but he saved money ( & made a tidy profit) by raising the roof & sliding the steel out bit by bit & replacing. Then lowering the roof onto the steel & re fixing the hook bolts. All done by me and a gang over a holiday. So we worked over an asbestos roof over some 2ft deep tanks that had some 9mm ply sheets over them supported randomly by 3x2 timbers. We were 25 ft above on the asbestos a couple of hammers had dropped through & disappeared into the baths between the gaps in the unfixed plywood After the job was done & the management were inspecting they started to have the covering removed. I asked what was in the tanks. "Oh they are the acid baths for dipping prior to chromadising" So much for H & S 45 years ago Edited By Sam Longley 1 on 20/08/2016 16:43:13 |
