Thread: MEW back issues
31/08/2023 11:13:59

A friend asked me where to get back issues of MEW? He doesn't have a digital subscription.

Mags UK seems to have dropped MEW from their back issues list, so who, if anyone, does MEW back issues?

Thanks,

Andrew.

Thread: Myford ML10 single wheel knurling tool.
26/08/2023 22:07:07

Bernard,

I do not have the Hemingway tool. I said that I have a knurling tool that is "The same style" as the Hemingway tool. Both are based on a well known industrial pattern. The knurls supplied by Hemingway do not fit my version. Ask how I know!

I had completely forgotten that I had a pair of unused straight knurls, now you have jogged my memory, I will get working tomorrow and produce the required item.

Thanks again everyone,

Andrew.

Hello,

'I just want to cut a very narrow, straight knurl. I am making some of the Myford resettable dials, which are described in a recent MEW.

I have no qualms about cutting a straight knurl pattern on a very narrow lip. The ML10 in question is the later ballrace headstock and is more than up to the job.

I do have a twin wheel knurling tool a la Hemingway style, but only diamond knurls to fit the same. Why buy two quality wheels when I only need one?. I have an aversion to the cheap Chinese / Indian wheels. I have tried them a couple of times and I am very unimpressed. Reverted to good quality ones, but my local supplier has retired.

So can anyone recommend a supplier of good quality, small straight knurls, or even a single wheel knurling tool with a small shank.

Looks as though I shall have to make it myself, so really just after a recommended supplier of good quality straight knurls.

Looking for a good quality single wheel knurling tool for the above lathe, Most single wheel knurling tools are 1/2" shank, which will be difficult to get the wheel at centre height. Ideally i would like an 8mm shank. So if they are difficult to find, I have the option of milling down a commercial 1/2" shank, or making my own..

If I make one, then can anyone point me to a source of decent quality small diameter straight knurl wheels. Seem to be lots of cheap Chinese / Indian wheels, but at the price being asked, I doubt if they are much good.

Thanks,

Andrew.

Hi Speedy,

Please don't use nitomethane in diesel fuel! That is for glow engines. The old fashioned "dope" was amyl nitrate or amyl nitrite. Try getting that from a chemist these days. I did as a boy!

I believe that some of the commercial octane (or is it cetane) boosters can substitute for the old nitrate or nitrite, but for the life of me I can't remember the names.

I had a similar experience with some brass from an Ebay seller. Machined more like soft, pure aluminium. i would get some brass from a respected seller like Macc Models, if the other suggestions fail to give results.

John,

Might have to go that route, if only I could get the damn nipple out. I ground to a halt on making a slim adapter for the oil gun. Would you believe the thread on the end of the gun is 0,520" O/D with a 25tpi pitch, a 1mm pitch is not such a good match as 25, but maybe just my eyesight.

Goodness knows what thread it is, but non standard for sure. Don't fancy the hassle of cutting an internal thread that size.

So back to making a slim tool to remove the nipple. seem to have wasted at least half a day and some brass and got no further forward. Just one of those days.

Andrew,

Well In usually look for cheaper second hand motors from respected manufacturers. 3 phase or single phase. I avoid cheap new motors from China. Found them noisy and not well balanced. Blow the nitty gritty technical stuff. Never had a failure with this philosophy and there are a lot more £s left in my pock.

Hello Michael,

Thanks for the link. I had decided to turn up a slim tool to remove the nipple, but wasn't sure what the between flats dimension was on the hex of the nipple. Your reply stopped me dead in my tracks, as the alternative of a slim extension for the oil gun was much more appealing, even some dimensions supplied too. I will switch material in the chuck and get on with making it!

Thank you again,

Andrew.

Just put new drive belts on my ML10 and a general service. I am totally stuck on an "how to deal with it" problem. There is a lubrication nipple on the mandrel triple pulley. It is situated on the boss of triple pulley and on the largest pulley wheel side.

Now the instructions say "oil this nipple", so I get out my non leaking oil gun and there is no chance that it will go on the nipple, the nose diameter of the gun way too big . Now the nipple is a straight one, maybe I can replace it with an angled version. I have tried everything to unscrew this nipple and it won't budge, because all the tools are too large to get at the hex section of the nipple.

I have tried mini spanners both normal and ringed, slim small sockets, nut spinners, tubular spanners and pliers. Nothing will get near to the hex portion of the nipple. I don't even know what the size is between flats, as I cant get a caliper in to measure it.

I have spent the best part of 3 hours trying to remove the nipple and it has me beaten. I cannot be the first person to have the problem of oiling this nipple. so how do others manage this feat?

I suspect the answer lies in having an oil gun that can reach the nipple. It must have a small diameter business end. So does anyone know how to do this simple job, without removing the lathe mandrel and dismantling it, to get at the pesky nipple!

Thread: Eclipse E225 scriber
18/08/2023 10:06:49

Hello,

Anyone notice that the Eclipse 227 scribe is available for £4.95 (including postage) from the same supplier? I prefer the 227 myself, but probably in a minority of one.

I often buy from Zoro and would not dream of comparing prices with Cromwell. Zoro are just so much cheaper. The only niggle about their website is when buying material. For example, the ground flat stock is listed in no logical order, so it is a pain to find what you want.

I have an Arrand screw on type . If you can find one of those, then grab it. They are extremely accurate and I can detect no run out on the collet angle.

Thread: Old Bee-Hives?
05/08/2023 19:06:33

Usually the skeps were weighed and only the heavy skeps were destroyed, because they were the ones containing most honey. The lighter ones were allowed to overwinter for the next season.

So instead of the survival of the fittest, you had the survival of the weakest. The result was that the old English bee wasn't very good at producing honey. Hence the mass importation of bees from Italy and other Med countries in the more recent past and indeed they are still imported.

I am not to keen on the newcomers as they tend to be large and aggressive. I prefer the older type which is smaller by comparison. It was thought that the old English bee was more or less extinct until they were found in trees that were part of an old undisturbed wood.

I once kept a skep, but gave up, as swarming was impossible to control.

Hello Bill you should never tap into the boiler shell. Always solder a bush into place and then you can tap to your hearts content.

Thread: Drive Belts for an ML10?
01/08/2023 10:51:01

Hello all,

Thanks for the help and advice! What stymied me was I could find no reference to Z belts. If an M series belt is only 0.5 mm difference to a Z belt then problem solves.

I am now sorted for considerably less than half of £25, no doubt plus postage!

Thanks again,

Andrew.
