Thread: 2 jet carb
07/09/2018 19:28:36

Any body out there had any success or otherwise with Jerry Howell's 2 jet carb, I have built 4 but cannot get them to work properly. Whenever both jets are open the engine draws air through 1 or other of the jets, the engine runs ok if only 1 jet is open. Any suggestion / comments much appreciated. Thank you. Farmer Dave

Hello all. Can anyone help . one of the brush holders on my Warco WM16 mill has over heated and melted the plastic resulting in the brush not running true. I have approached Warco for a replacement but they can only offer me a new motor. Does anybody know where I might find a holder or maybe I could make one . Regards Farmer Dave

Hello all I'm needing a wee bit of help setting up my rotary table, need to cut 125 divisions. my table turns 90 degrees per turn of the crank , how do I calculate it and what index plate should I use. My chart only goes to 100 divisions . Thanks for your help. Farmer Dave

Thread: valve size
10/04/2015 21:34:33

Thank you for your suggestions guys. Intake valves are bobbing up and down nicely, the springs are very soft, I don't think that is the problem.Jason the engines you use as a comparison would confirm my valves are to small and I've started to make larger ones and I think I'll raise the compression a little.

Hello all Can anyone help. I have built a 2 cyl boxer horizontal 4 stroke with atmospheric intake valve and mechanical exhaust, I cant get it to run very well,I suspect the valves and air ways are to small for the size of the cylinders (28mm bore x 30mm stroke) the valves are only 8mm dia what would be the optimum size for the valves. Thank you all in advance Dave

Thread: Heating a workshop.
12/12/2014 21:05:26

Chris its a workshop heater not for a bedroom or kitchen and not nearly as noisy as these domestic ones . By the way I'm a Scot and don't like spending more than I need

11/12/2014 21:53:54

I've just bought a 2kw Stanley workshop heater from screwfix its a blower heater with thermostatic control, not very noisy, it doesn't seam to get very hot but it quickly raises the temperature in my 8ft x 8ft shed. I am very pleased with it.

Thread: Ivel Tractor

Rod I've got the book and been to Vallum Farm armed with camera and paper/pencil , hoped I could find detailed engine drawings , it would save a lot of guess work.

Jason I didn't find anything new in smokestack.

Thank's for your help anyway .

29/08/2014 21:36:30

Hi folks Anyone out there know where I might find plans/drawings or articles about the Ivel Agricultural Motor to give it its correct title, I know someone called Billy Smith from Northumberland built an excellent model but I don't know if he published any plans. Any help much appreciated.

Thread: mig or tig
06/07/2014 21:53:32

Thanks for all your thoughts and advice, it would seem that to get a decent machine I would need to spend £800/£900 and need some help & training. I think I'll stick with my usual method of pins/rivets and filler or get a pro to do it for me. My hands are not that steady anyway.

I am thinking about buying a small welder suitable for welding aluminium sheet/plate to form crankcases and other parts for model engines. I have not much knowledge of either Mig or Tig with or without gas.Can anybody help what would you recommend.

Thread: Waterloo Boy
02/07/2014 21:25:49

Hello all

Answers to your questions.

Andy, at the moment I am revisiting a 4cylinder 4 stroke I built last year making a fee mods.

Stewart, Its around 1/8 scale 400mm x 220mm rear wheels 200mm dia.

Jason, you will need to wait till tomorrow for your photos Its raining cats & bogs at the moment.

Neil , showing my ignorance what is NASCAR, I built it for my own satisfaction just to see if I could . I started with a photograph of the full size tractor and worked from there with the help of a fag packet and some head scratching.

Olballie, Its a 2 cylinder 4 stroke of my own design, 24mm bore x 25mm stroke ,Ill leave it to you to calculate the C.C., water cooled petrol engine, with Rexel electronic ignition through a distributer, and drip lubrication to the crankshaft .

I thought a driver would make it look more like a toy than a model. just my opinion.

Thank you for all your comments. Dave

waterloo boy 003Hello All I thought I would take this opportunity to thank you all for you help and suggestion over the last year. I thought you might like to see some photos and a video of my completed model.

It is a lookalike of the Waterloo Boy which was built in US around 1914/20. It was the forerunner of the John Deere tractors that are so common today.

My model is a 2 cylinder 4 stroke petrol engine with one forward and 1 reverse gear as was the original. however my one was all built entirely from bar stock, I also cheated a bit with the ignition using modern electronics As an afterthought I fitted it with RC operating the Steering, Clutch/ Brake , Gear change & throttle. Some of you will remember I asked for advice about cutting internal tooth gears for the drive wheels as were correct on the model N, but as this was beyond my capabilities I used external toothed gears which were correct for the earlier model R.

Thanks again Farmer Dave

Thread: fuel tank
15/05/2014 21:08:13

Thank you for your help lads ,I;m thinking I might try a lightly sprung valve in the fuel line, it would be similar to the valve you suggested Jason. Neil, I was wondering if it could be done with pipe work & air vents to avoid the open tank.

thanks again Farmer Dave

Hi Lads/Lassies I'm having problems with the fuel supply on a tractor I am building i.e.as with most tractors the fuel tank sits higher than the carb and it floods the engine as you would expect. I recall reading somewhere about someone using a chicken drinker type feed to solve this problem, can anyone be of any help or maybe have some other solution.

Thread: cutting internal gears
24/11/2013 19:57:03

Hi All ,I want to cut the gears on the large internal gear (200mm dia) on the attatched photo, is it possible, and if so how.                  Regards Dave

Hello bogs Just been on ebay ,see what you mean about price, would even the smallest not be to large and out of scale for a model engine. Gerry Howall's one measures 17mm x 17mm for the block with adjustment screws sticking out from it. I am very reluctant to buy anything I can make myself, that's why I started model engineering, its part of the challenge. I make everything I can although I draw the line as regards the ignition & electronics.
