Thread: Hello from Wimbledon

Welcome James, you will find a few bike people here, many Myford owners and a VAST range of others, a very useful font of knowledge ! Best wishes, Noel.

One point to remember with some emergency stop buttons is they may latch ! This means that to reset the button must be turned to pop out - the circuit is now reset ! Noel.

Hi John, I thought I remembered the article. I hope you fully recovered. Best wishes Noel.

Hi John, Your unfortunate incident - Had some one use the machine to grind aluminium ? If so then what happened was a thermit reaction. Aluminium should NEVER be ground on a general purpose machine where steel is or will be used. Noel

Thread: Smoke box material.

2mm is stout in either material but brass doesn't corrode. Noel.

My copy of The metalworkers Data Book (2009 ) lists BSB and tells me that like many old british threads it is witworth form WF. Interestingly it does NOT give a thread form for the other 26tpi system, BSC, is it 55*, 60* or some other ? Noel.

Thread: Belt/disc sander
24/08/2023 09:42:44

I used an axminster linisher with a 6" wide belt for finishing brass castings. It worked well. yes they could get hot ! One needs to keep the switch gear and any other electrics protected from the fine conductive dust. If left for any length of time ALWAYS rotate the belt before starting as it may stick to the rollers and stall the motor and cook it ! Noel.

A truely beautiful model. Being a true philistine, my second thought was take off the coupling rods, change the wheels, put a perch bracket under the smoke box and turn it into a traction engine ? Noel.

Robert is correct in his comment and I had made the fatal mistake of assumption - that in wiring up a machine tool one would use at least 1.5 flex or cable. I tend to use 2.5 flex but that is because I can, though things get tight in some 13a plugs !

Chris, to find the sectional area of a wire or flex take 1 strand accurately measure the diameter in mm then use the formula Pi R squared. If a single conductor then that will be the answer, if flex then multiply the answer by the number of strands. Since in the main there are standard sizes of flex or cable if the answer looks near it should be right - or way out and obviously wrong ! Good luck. Noel.

Thread: Unusual Thread Type?

Might prove useful ! may I have one , if theres any left. Noel.

Thread: Boring - best practice?

If the finish REALLY matters, rough out, leaving slightly undersize and finish with a cylinder hone ! Noel.

Thread: Thread size on xd 3420 motor
19/08/2023 14:18:47

Hi Nick W The qestion was not mine ! I have thread gauges in Imperial, Metric and BA ! They are invaluable for me and often used when a thread of unknown type is need of identifying ! Noel.

19/08/2023 10:29:07

M8 x 1mm is a common enough thread ! more so in electrical stuff. As jason says use an M6 x 1mm bolt as a thread gauge. Noel.

Thread: 24V rectifier for lighting.
19/08/2023 10:06:53

I used an LED floodlight on a 24v transformer and rectifier - it flickered so I used the first cap that was to hand 1000uf at 50v that stopped it ! Noel.

Thread: IT'S GOT NO GUTS ?
18/08/2023 10:39:13

It would not figure in the fine models class but the one that made me think long and hard was shown at I think Olimpia in the 90s ! It was an anniversary of the BHI I seem to think.

It was a clock that as the day went on showed the right time, I came back several times to check, but it only had 2 hands on a plain spindle. There was no visible mechanism to move the hands or keep them in step. I have my own ideas as to how it might have been done BUT does anyone remember this item or know how it worked ? Noel

Thread: Starter Capacitor on a 1950s bench grinder
17/08/2023 22:25:17

If the option is there read the running current and see what it shows but heating will be the give away. An 8" grinder will hum as it gets up speed, might take 2 seconds. It reaches proper running speed - 2800 or so ? IT IS single phase and not a 3 phase with a steinmetz connection, hence the capacitor ? Just a few thoughts. Noel.

Thread: Unlucky or what !

I'm with Baz ! Return as flawed. There a good firm. Noel.

Thread: Bridgeport Issue
16/08/2023 22:17:49

Whilst it could be a faulty centrifugal switch the bad spot theory - not sure ! The thrust ring that operates the stationary switch ? The contact points ? Has the start cap gone out of spec ? Or is there a bearing or driveline problem causing an overload on start up. Depending on the drive is it a variable speed drive with a problem or trying to start up at too high a speed setting. If single phase has it got the right motor power ( 2Hp ) ? Good Luck. Noel.

Thread: Brook Compton Motor reverse
14/08/2023 20:09:15

Using the diagram shown by Brook then all 4 wires , 2 start and 2 run must be taken to the reversing switch ! using the links marked up on the photo and as shown the motor IS NOT reversable !  The diagram for the reversing switch will only work if one end of the run winding is wired round the switch to neutral. As shown it is for 3phase ! Noel

Having re read the question again YOU MUST run all 4 wires back to the switch ! you should NOT use the reverser as a stop start switch and a No VOLT release should be between the plug and the reverser. I must take it you do not understand motor wiring and that you should seek the help of a competent person !.
