So where, in the kitchen, could you easily demonstrate Bernoulli?

Sam smile d

Chilling out in Melbourne

Just let a container with a rounded lip and a gentle supply of water overflow. Looking from the side, a " Bernoulli Line " can be seen where the surface of the water dips as it accelerates over the curved lip and the acceleration causes a local pressure drop at the surface. Water flowing over a wier is a good example.

I'd rather be chilling out in Melbourne than here in Solihull!

So are the Disney Studios' V and U for drawing cartoon dinosaurs, the same mathematical entities that Mr. Green discovered / invented for decorating coffee-mugs? Of what are they values?

This stirs distant memories of Calculus. The common theme appears to be the relationship betwen the distance traelled by a point in the x (dx = Delta x), y and z directions to the initial and final velocities of the point. Now dw rings a bell, but very faintly as my university days ended 50 years ago!

Thread: Bridgeport J Head Belt Drive Clones
16/07/2023 16:53:49

I have recently sold my Bridgeport 2J belt head milling machine, having owned it for over 10 years. It sold on eBay for £2,300, these machines are now in the region of 40 + years old. Mostly, these machines were used in industry and were 3 phase machines. Mine was a single phase machine, having been converted to single phase as a secondary operation at the end of the production line. As such it was unlikely to have been intensively used and showed little sign of wear. Many second-hand machines are severely worn. I would not purchase a Bridgeport without inspection preferably accompanied by an experienced milling machine user.

Apart from wear, other considerations are the cost of delivery, the space envelope required, and, if not a single phase machine, how to supply 3 phase power.

The first bidder to inspect my machine had received several quotes for moving it 25 miles, the cheapest quote being £500 but found that one of his friends had a 7 1/2 ton lorry with a Hiab, so he could get it moved for the price of diesel plus beer tokens. The winning bidder took 3 hours to move it from my garage and load it onto his 3 1/2 ton trailer with his Kubota digger.

Space required for the machine is quoted in the handbook as 10 ft wide and 7 ft deep, this seem a little excessive, mine was installed across an 8 ft wide garage with just enough room to walk between the controls and a 2ft wide bench against the opposite wall.

Thread: Myford levelling on industrial stand
16/05/2023 09:24:39

Hi,

When I boughtt my Myford 254, I loosened the two bolts holding it down to the industrial stand. I fitted jacking feet to the cabinet and "un-leveled" the stand so Coolant flowed towards the drain hole.

I think your Super 7 should have two levelling grubscrews under the headstock and two under the tailstock. After putting some tension on the two hold down bolts, these grubscrews are used to "level" the lathe.

Gordon

ps Hopper types faster. I'm  not familiar with the  Super 7, but if it has grubscrews, I'd try those before considering shiming.

As an aside, I started playing with variable tables in SE yesterday and found that I could set up simple objects that were somewhat like Open SCAD models, where you just change key named variables and the whole model is updated immediately. I don't have an immediate use for them but did enjoy exploring the basics...

I've put the knowledge in my "May Come in Useful Later " box for now smiley

Ian,

The variable table is very useful, you can also relate driven dimensions to other dimensions by entering equations in the formula column. As you have found, the model then updates immediately as you edit the table. However, you need to take care with driven and driving dimensions and which end(s) of the dimension are driven otherwise the model may distort unexpectedly. Care also needs to be taken where other features may be dimensioned from the edited feature.

The variable table really comes to the fore when you start using one of the key features of solid edge, the Family of Parts feature. A master part is created, this can include both Synchronous and Ordered features. In SE 2023, Ordered features are shown as outlines in Synchronous mode when viewing in shaded style but appear normally in wire frame style.

If not visible, the Family of parts feature is entered by selecting the Family of Parts pane from the Panes tab of the view menu. The Master part becomes the basis of a family of related parts, created by adding new members to the family and editing the new members in the variable table. Any ordered features in the table can be suppressed so it is possible to create parts with or without all of the features of the master part.

Nigel,

The key combination of Alt + Printscreen copies only the active window, not the whole desktop. If the copied view is pasted into paint, you can select part of the picture and use the "Crop" command to delete the unwanted area.

Thread: Super 7 Pump wiring
03/04/2023 10:07:55

The wiring diagram for my single phase Myford 254 shows both wires to the Coolant Pump switch are taken from the motor run windings. This is how I connected mine when I added it. The S7 manual which I downloaded did not show any pump.

If you read the handbook, you should find details of the pin out for connecting the speed control to a remote pendant and the inverter setting parameter to change speed contol from the Inverter potentiomater to a remote potentiometer.

Thread: What did you do today? 2023
01/02/2023 23:43:37

Today, I said au revoir to my lathe and the bulk of my workshop which is now in storage while I sell my house. My Bridgeport was sold just before Christmas, I’d looked at the cost of storing it but the size and shape of the Bridgeport meant I would need a storage container, the cost of the container and transporting the mill to it then onwards to where I’m moving to was prohibitive. The cheapest quote one prospective purchaser obtained was £500 to transport the mill 25 miles!

To keep me occupied until I’m reunited with my equipment, I’ve bought a little Taig on eBay and I’ll probably retrieve my old Sigma Jones Jig Borer and renovate/update it. I have a bench drill, but its seen better days. Any serious milling and drilling will have to go to my model engineering club.

Apologies for the rotated photo, I hope that a Moderator will edit it to portrait orientation in my post and album. I fail to understand why this forum defaults photos to landscape mode and has no visible means of correcting the orientation. I searched Neil’s Sticky, but the discussion petered out with the assumption that photos should naturally be in Landscape mode.

Well, I made a real mess of the subscription start dates in my earlier post. My ME subscription began in November 2017 and my MEW subscription began in December 2017.

When under the old system I clicked on Magazines I could look back since the MEW started or some later date for ME. Now it appears we can only see when we had a subscription. So we appear to have lost what was a great bonus.

Now we have to jump through hoops before even seeing what we have paid for. Something seems to have gone awry.

Its' worse than that, My MEW subscription began in August 2012, I used to be able to see all MEW in the archive from Issue 1, Now I can only see archive copies from March 2020! My ME subscription began in in 2017, similarly I can only see archive copies from 1st May 2021, although the latter one is shown with a date of 4th April 2020

Thread: New To CAD? No, but....
17/05/2022 10:28:05

SOD,

Re your no-appearing midpoint, had you locked the plane with F3? If I use the hole command without the F3 press, hovering over the edge of a plane does not show any end or mid points initially, slowly hovering along the line around the mid point does display the mid point symbol at the cursor, together with the mid point in orange on the line. Moving off the line, these dissappear but no red alignment marks are shown as I track along thecentre. My laptop F3 key is showing its age and not responding today but my USB keyboard is elsewhere now, certainly displays when F3 is working

Hi SOD,

Just a brief reply, I'm unable to go into details until tonight, too busy during the day.

Steering wheel form changes according to to placement. In simplest form its the extrusion arrow. Your bottom picture is its full 3D form. It can move and rotate features, be aligned to features then move or copy other features while maintaining that alignment, rotate surfaces and features. It is really more like an aircraft joystick than a Steering Wheel!

As to explaining it, I'll try later but I'm still learning bmyself. It can be quite confusing and it's behaviour can be sensitive to the order of mouse and key strokes

Gordon

ps Siemens have some useful resources concerning it

Nigel,

I have used the Sketching Tab to draw my shape and it gives the same results as using the Home Tab, Wlll have to adjourn until tomorrow. If you have some spare time, to make things easier, please could you repeat the excercise, opening a new Iso Metric part .,par while recording a Video. The video does not require any equipment or software, it is all done within SE. The instructions are below

  1. Open SE
  2. Click the Application Button at top left
  3. On the window that opens, click the red "Record" button and a pop up opens
  4. Click the drop-down arrow in the box under area to record
  5. Click "Custom Area"
  6. Click "Define Area"
  7. The cursor changes to a Cross symbol
  8. Place the cursor so it is above and to left of SE Screen
  9. Left click and hold down the mouse button while dragging cursor to opposite corner of SE screen and enclosing any area where a pop up appears, you should see some borders around the dragged area, release the button.
  10. As you don't have a microphone, skip the sound
  11. Close the window
  12. On the SE screen press the red button,, a small pop up control window with stop and pause button and Duration & file size pops up
  13. Experiment with it to check it works and inclues any pop ups in video
  14. You can pause/restart or stop viedo, Discard the practice video or save the last recorded video
  15. click the SE icon in top left of SE window to get back to the SE Start page

I will PM you my email address tomorrow, if you send me a video of the screen while doing the excercises I'll be in touch in the afternoon

Gordon
