So when doing split point on the Sealey do you reset the drill bit in the jig after doing the basic grind? The Chinglish instructions that came with my clone don't advise to do it but some YouTube videos say you do. I always reset the drill bit for the split point grinding, and get good results. Theres a small video here which gives a demonstration **LINK**

I bought a toolpost grinder of a similar size. It was missing the drive belt. I was planning to use an O-ring. Has anyone had success doing so? I have a Dumore grinder of great vintage, the original flat belt disintegrated, but fortunately there is a local belt supplier fairly close to me, I took the unit in to the shop and they made me two new belts for less than a tenner. If its any help **LINK** Regards |

It's worth remembering that if this drone is able to stay aloft for a few hours then it likely has a substanial lipo on board and once damaged they burn with very corrosive fumes. I've seen r/c helis with twin 6S 5AH packs go up on crashing... entertaining if not one's own. Quite what that would to to a jet engine would be less amusing.
Aligning that to electric vehicles **LINK** and **LINK** or even **LINK** Regards |

That may be because these days every motor mechanic (sorry, automotive technician) has a brake fluid tester the size of a ballpoint pen in his top pocket. Stick it in the fluid reservoir. press the button and a green/yellow/red LED tells you if the fluid has absorbed excess water, which it almost always has after a couple of years. Testers aren't expensive - **LINK** Regards |

Reading the thread about combi boilers makes me think that saving the planet is becoming a bit silly, I dont disagree with the basic premise but its costing us individuals lots of money. I'm collecting my car from the dealer garage tomorrow where its been for the last week because the Catalytic Converter light came on followed by the management light, the traction control and cruise control also failed all because of the DPF failing and it failed because I who prides himself in acheiving the best MPG, doesnt break speed limits, doesnt thrash his car enough to burn the filter clean, so trying to save fuel and drive carefully is about to cost me £507, basically I give up and whats the point of trying. Rant over. Martin P FWIW, cleaning a DPF both active or passive does not require the breaking of speed limits, more the use of higher revs over a period of time. Most DPFs dont start to clean until the gas flow through them is high enough, on Peugeot / Citroen for instance its at 2400 Rev/min, which as most would accept would be well in excess of the national limit in top gear. So don't use top gear - you can bring the revs up in a lower gear ins cruise, it won't harm the engine but even so it can take upwards of 20 minutes at those revs to produce a full clean. Normally when a DPF blocks you will get plenty of warning before the CAT fails and there are now a number of businesses that will remove the DPF, and pressure clean it to good effect for about £60 (BMW X5) . Thread: How o Remove Chester Super Lux Motor |
16/12/2018 14:04:36 |
Looking at the similarity of one of our work mills, it may be that you have to remove the whole top plate as the gearbox input shaft is pinned to the motor shaft and the whole lot comes out as an assembly. Regards

Thread: Cost of deliveries |

Something else to watch out for is importation from the US. As prices have risen in the American markets, the price of Castings on the larger engines has made them enter into requiring an 'Importers Licence' by the buyer. Having filled out all the relevant forms - graciously supplied by UPS in this instance, it was discovered that the price for importation and delivery only extended to the UK airport and not to your door. Price for shipping $1800 worth of castings was $400 including importation duties, plus another £160 to get it from the airport to home. Buyers beware Regards |

Not likely to be of any help, but why does the Super Lux have such a switch and does the "Common or garden" model have one too ? Just asking in case I ever come across it,since I have a LUX ! Tried that larry, nobody took any notice. The centrifugal switch? Larger motors have them they allow a starting winding to help the motor get going in the right direction and up to speed. When running fast enough the switch takes the start winding out of circuit before it overheats. Neil I think that some of these machine motors are PSC types, the 3hp Single Phase 2-Pole Motor on my compressor certainly didn't have a CS. |

Thread: Chester Super Lux - Motor Failure |

Do these motors actually have a centrifugal switch? Only my Fobco drill has a motor that you can actually hear the switch cutting back in on the rundown. Both Warco Lathes and Mill do not, neither did my SIP compressor - all had two capacitors. Fortunately when my mill packed up in the way described above it was obvious to see by the damaged capacitor casing. Simply replacing it cured the problem |

I spoke to Helen this afternoon, their email has changed - [email protected] for anyone that needs it. I've seen the quality of construction, and as you say, it can't be faulted. Really looking forward to getting mine to be able to start the build. I've been building boilers since the mid eighties, but with certification and gas prices for the bigger units going up and up, decided to get a fully commercially built and properly certificated unit for this time. Regards |

Cheers all, I think it may have been Helen that I spoke to when I finally managed to get through on the phone, I don't mind waiting for it as I know they are really busy, but it would be really good to have a progress or non-progress report occasionally. And apologies, it was January 17 I ordered it - just feels like a long time, still its coming up two years. Regards

Has anyone had any experience of Western Steam - boiler manufacturers in Somerset? I ordered a boiler in january '16 and am still waiting for it, it was estimated to be complete by jul 18, the email address used in the original communication is no longer valid, but I did manage to make contact via phone at the end of August for a forecast, only to be told it hadn't been started yet and should be ready by mid Sept. So far no boiler. Regards |

Thread: Death of Model Engineering? |

I retired 2 years ago fom the MINI plant Oxford and they had built a new apprentice training school with conventional machine tools to give the apprentices a year of practical hands on training, it was good to see. I am sure that an apprentice should have a solid appreciation of how things are made even if the job they will do at the end will not require them to use a lathe or a mill or do any bench fitting. I was turned to the dark side by the electrical instructor but I always had a love of getting my hands dirty on mechanical jobs and feel the first year of general training was time well spent. Another generation of apprentice will have been exposed to the basics and it may spark an interest in making things. Mike After spending five years training up to 50 apprentices a year in basic machining skills, the most received comment I get after they have completed their tasks is: 'How much will I get for it on Ebay'
