2 forum posts | Apologies if this is old hat but can anyone please point me in the direction of a publication or article which might offer hints and tips or construction advice for the Vulcan beam engine from scratch. I have ordered the plans but any advice would be welcomed. Thanks Paul Casey |

![]() 25215 forum posts 3105 photos 1 articles | The article that was in Model engineer will go a long way to showing you how to machine it from castings and bar stock. Volumes 111 &112 are what you need. If you intend to fabricate the cast parts then there is no actual specific article that deals with the Vulcan but some web searching will find several scratch builds of similar style engines and the same principals can be applied. I have a series running on a compettitors web magazine at the moment or you can find the original build thread that it is taken from on MEM and Jo's beam engine on the same forum here. Both engines will be at Guildford show this weekend if you want to see up close or ask questions. J |

![]() 694 forum posts 2 photos | The articles referred to by Jason were re-printed a few years ago in the Best of Model Engineer volume 2. (Spring 2010). A small word of warning. Both the construction articles and the modern drawings are fine but there are differences in the dimensions of certain parts e.g. the big end of the connecting rod. so work to either the modern drawing or the drawings in the construction article. Best regards

2 forum posts | Many thanks for the good advice. I have obtained a copy of Best of Model Engineer with the relevent article and it is spot on. With this and the drawings from my hobby store I should have enough to keep me from under wifey's feet for a little time to come |
