Problems with sealing valve chest to Cylinder

I have just about finished putting all together and have used a foot pump as Mr Hughes suggests, to try to check for leaks. I seem to have a direct leak to the exhaust !! I suspect problems where the valve chest fixes to the cylinder. Indeed the traditional Fairy Liquid solution test for leaks has bubbles coming from the bottom corner join between valve chest and cylinder.
There are 2 ways that the valve chest is fastened to the cylinder - from the bottom and using the studs that hold the valve chest cover in place. There are no mentions of gaskets between valve chest and cylinder in the book. Has anyone any suggestions or thoughts on sealing valve chest to cylinder given that the two ways of fixing are at right angles to each other and the exhaust port is drilled along the join!

If your machined surfaces are fairly good then I would just go with a liquid gasket as there is no need to make allowance for the thickness of any gasket paper.
