147 forum posts 1 photos | Help wanted again. I've got the chuck jaw problem sorted and I'll put up some pics later this week. I now have a problem sourcing raw material. I have searched the net but so far no one seems to want to sell small amounts. What I want is Titanium strip about 3/8" wide by .050" thick grade 1 or 2. This is to make spring clips. Does anyone know where I can buy about 10 ft of this?
cheers

![]() 5068 forum posts 3 photos | Ray, Ironically enough just ordered some bits today. I often need small amounts as it's so damn expensive. Rang one company and telling them what I wanted when the nice lady said "I'm sorry to interrupt but we have a £5,000 minimum order charge " at which i said well I'd better stop before one of us becomes embarrassed. She was nice enough to point me to a company I have used since but in all fairness i only buy round off them, never bought sheet. This from the email today. TI-TEK [UK] Limited

As a guide Ti-shop.com wants £103 plus vat and carriage for a 3metre length of 8mm round. Ti-Tek has quoted me £50 all in including carriage for the same product. John S. |

It doesn't answer your question specifically but there are some varying pieces of sheet etc on Ebay which may be of use.
Further to one of your recent posts would this be for use in anodising?
I just bought a few Titanium tig welding rods off E Bay at reasonable cost for use as hangers in my small set up - plenty left it would appear.

147 forum posts 1 photos | Thanks for that John S, I'll give them a ring.
Yes its for anodising. I want to make springy clips to clamp across the threads as per production lines. I can make the 'springs' in various sizes as there only a set number of threads used. (T thread, C thread stc) At hte moment I use ally wire but this doesn't always give good contact and where it touches you end up with white lines.
If I can't get the strip at a reasonable price I'll continue making toolmaker type clamps in PVC with 2mm titanium wire as the prods. I have a lt of 2mm titanium wire.
Thanks for your help.

147 forum posts 1 photos | Well, at last I can report on various things that I now have working.
The first is the inverter drive, What a joy. even parting off is no problem, the rear type parting tool holder has now been consigned to the bin where it belongs. I do a lot of threading in Ali, all up to a shouder. The chuck stops in 5 thou of travel, so with a 1 thread undercut I have no problems.
The anodising department is now up and running. After a steep learning curve I can now produce work that stands beside commercial output. I haven't tried colours yet.
As promised here is a pic of the holders.
The ends of the prongs are fine points that lock into the threads.
Thanks to all who gave me help and pointers.
cheers

Glad to hear you are up and running.
I too am over the moon with the inverter drive so much so have bought another for the mill.
Re the anodising I take it the dark item is the anodised part - as you say you haven't tried colours yet is that a 'test piece'?
Regarding colours I would imagine you will not go down the 'Dylon' route but just incase you are thinking of so doing my experience of it is that it is not really worth it. Apparently only the very early, now discontinued, small round tins contained the dye, some of which, would work. I spent some time on currently available Dylon with no success at all. I bought some correct anodising dye off an ebay supplier - instant result and an even better outcome was using parker green ink though that gets expensive if you need any quantity but the results were superb.
Hope that's helped a little more

147 forum posts 1 photos | Cheers Ramon,
I use 'professional' dyes from Gateros. They do do all you need for anodising and plating. The best thing is that you can order small quantities of acid and desmutter if you need it. As my tanks only hold a gallon I have enough to last for years. I found that most suppliers will not deal in small quantities and definately not to individuals.
So far I have put 300 items through.
The only problem I have now is that I would like to change the surface finish. At the moment they come out with a nice even sheen. I would prefer a satin non reflective finish.
Does anyone have a suggestion.
I have a workshop compressor so I can easily make a light 'shot blasting' box. However sand is apparentley no longer available, (H&E), glass beads would do but are too coarse.
cheers
