Len Mason, in the drawings for Minnie, shows all pipe end fittings into nipples as a straight hole, square end and a union nut with square bottom.  No method of sealing or retaining the pipe is shown or described in the construction manual.  He obviously assumes one knows how to achieve the seal.  My trade is aircraft fitter, and I've always used olives or an end fitting to terminate a pipe/tube.  This will probably be the original dumb question to most of you, but please can someone enlighten me?

I went for small "washers" silversoldered to the ends of the pipe thus creating a flange that will bear against the square end of the fitting. Works OK on air but never tried my Minnie on steam.

On the larger sizes it is usual to use a ferrule and a union nut with the end of the fitting suitably CSk to allow the ferrule to seat just like an olive seats into a pipe fitting. The ferrule is silversoldeded to the pipe.

The only downside to this on small engines is the nut has to have a larger AF as the hole has to pass over the ferrule not just the pipe.

Thanks Jason.  I made little olives for the pipe to the blower nozzle in the smoke box but there didn't seem to be enough meat in the outlet nipple from the blower valve for this approach unless I used 1/16" OD pipe.  I figured the ID would be too small to pass the steam if I did this.  I think I will try to make little cones to silver solder onto the end of a 3/32" pipe.  Fingers crossed.
