![]() 543 forum posts 31 photos | I am interested in making my own Indicator with a larger than standard dial (suit my poor eyesight). On the face of it it seems to be a relatively simple item to construct; my idea so far is to machine a lump of round aluminium stock for the case/mounting turn a BMS shaft then make the dial & drive gear from Brass. Making the drive gear should be interesting my plan is to mount/index it in the shaper and cut on a slight? angle. My question then is where might a chap find/purchase plans for home made versions of the above, do they exist even? searching this site and a general "Google" has drawn a blank so far. You will have to work out your own gear size; it doesn't stipulate which lathe it is for though, in the picture, the tool holder points to it being American (South Bend?) |

829 forum posts 1 photos | Unless you want to make your own gear for aesthetic reasons, you could probably use a standard spur gear of the right pitch. There's no load on it so the exact tooth form is not that important. It just has to move one tooth per rev of the leadscrew. You could possibly find a suitable worm gear too but that might be a bit fussier. Edited By Sid Herbage on 25/07/2010 17:40:33 Edited By Sid Herbage on 25/07/2010 17:42:51 |

The google book article is good.
I was toying with the idea of making the drive gear from Nylon/Delrin.
