8 forum posts | I was wondering if one of our valve gear experts could be persuaded to design Stephenson’s valve gear for Don Young’s Derby 2P design? I have a liking for this design but, for me, the non-prototypical Joy valve gear is off-putting. This is not a criticism of Don’s design which I am sure is a great performer. It just a personal view that valve gear is part of the essence of the prototype. |

![]() 517 forum posts 57 photos | Hi John, I will probably be able to do it for you if nobody else volunteers. I have the original LLAS articles with the drawings etc. Designing valve gears is pretty straightforward nowadays with the help of the work of Don Ashton etc. John |

Don Ashton is willing to do the basics but you will need to flesh it out and clothe it.
If interested, email me direct and I will put you in touch.

8 forum posts | Hi John and David,
I am somewhat embarrassed because I realise belatedly that my post was, in effect, asking for someone to do some work for me! This feeling is compounded by the fact that the 2P is on a “wish List” and not on my workbench. I will send David a private mail, as requested. I have a copy of Don Ashton’s book myself, which adds to my embarrassment because I guess I ought to be able to have a go at designing the gear myself. Maybe in the back of my mind I was thinking that there might be others interested and that an article in M.E. might be appropriate and the author could accordingly be remunerated. I am very grateful for the helpful offers but I really don’t want to put anyone to any trouble on my behalf. |
