Hi, and congratulations on the website.

As a total noob, I find MEW a great read - I have bought several copies over the last 3 months or so, and will probably subscribe soon.

An article in May 2009 (issue no. 150) re Workshop Clamping was most informative, and now I have a lathe and drill press I would like to learn techniques by having a go at making some clamps.

My problem - I am such a noob it is not obvious to me what material they are made from.

All guidance very much appreciated!!

Regards, A

Hi There
Welcome to the forum.
Clamps are best made of mild steel.

As a stop gap use, M8 or M10 or 3/8 BSF, threaded rod cut to different lengths; a bag of matching washers and nuts.

Depending on the T slot size yo may need to file 2 'steps' either side of 2 nuts to be a free slide in the T slots.

Slide a nut into the T slot, screw a thread in, drop a washer over followed by a nut, tighten down, and your ready to start clamping.

Hello,

In MEW nº 157 page 18, article "MAKING A WOBLE BROACHING HOLDER" Mr Jack Miller
writes, in the middle column, under General topic: "Opening out the pilote hole to A/F size
plus 0.05mm eases the work of the broach.".  Can someone, please, let me know the
meaning of the "A/F" ?

Thanks in advance
Dias Costa

Hi Dias
AF means across flats.
In other words the hexagon size.
