Hello everyone!

Brand new here and just getting into machining through a friend.

Basically I've picked up an absolutely wonderful (albeit incredibly heavy!) 1977 CVA mk1a toolroom lathe.

It all functions wonderfully but it certainly needs some cosmetic work and general servicing. I'm beginning by flushing all the oil out and I'm struggling to get all of the sight glasses drained. I've found two drains in the side part behind the belt cover, basically the headstock drain is at the top and the gearbox is down the bottom. I'm struggling to find any others - will they potentially be far away like down in the apron from the feed there?

Glad I did it, the oil in the headstock was milky, but I'm struggling to drain 3 out of the 5 sight glasses so any suggestions welcome! I konw its based on a 10EE and they suggest you need to remove the sight glasses, but these arnt a simple screw on arrangement like on the monarch, i imagine they are designed to be punched out from inside once fully taken apart?

Thanks in advance!

Elliott

Welcome. The CVAs are a joy to use. To remove the sight glasses you need a tool with 3 pins to insert into the sight glasses holes. The tool allows you to rotate and carefully extract them. They are just a push fit, not screwed. Alternatively (very carefully) use a pin spanner. See here for info:
