Myford Nerd

Hi to everyone, l am a newbie to the site and thread. Wanting some advice on a situation of selling my father in laws Myford super 7 lathe on stand with lots of extras. He bought it new and had it installed in his second floor rear bedroom…please don’t laugh…., to where it still is and hardly been used. He’s not used it for over 20 years apart from giving it a run and grease. He’s 95 and has onset of dementia so cannot get the names of the parts from him. Question is , where’s the best place to get the information needed so l can list for sale. I have got some basic information and gathering more .

Hi and welcome to the forum. Plenty of Myford nerds on here who can help. If you post pictures of the lathe and the accessories/parts/tools I am sure you will get plenty of feedback. The Super 7 models bring a good price these days, so don't let some "workshop clearance" business short change you. Better off to sell on this forum or eBay etc.

Hi Les, welcome to the party ! Hopper has warned of workshop clearance outfits and I would agree, You would be lucky to get half the true value. Post pictures and we can put names to the parts Etc, I have S7s and almost all the parts and accesories. Best wishes Noel.

Thanks guys for the welcome, l will get some photos of the lathes , it seems there is another smaller Myford lathe l have found also in the upstairs room. I will get some photos and put them on here. I am l putting this on the right post as didn’t know which listing to put on. Regards Les.

Les, + another one for not going to a workshop clearance outfit. I once used one of these to sell a machine, I was disappointed by the price I got and outraged at what he sold it for.

In my experience eBay is the best place to sell despite their charges. Myford kit attracts a lot of attention and the deal prices often look crazy to us but it just reflects the clever psychology that the site exploits. It's tempting to set a reserve price that is close to what you think it's worth but this is a mistake I think - start with a low "bid" to get bidding going, don't be surprised if the bid price rockets up as the end time approaches. You can be surprised at how much things sell for!

If you search the internet you can find copies of Myford sales brochures which could help identifying you stuff.

Thank you everyone for the advice given , l am getting to know some of the basics, and will be looking to gain knowledge, l definitely will not be using a workshop clearance company as the father in-laws just been screwed badly by one of these scrupulous firms, they have taken 60 years collection of 00 gauge model train engines that where valued at £80,000 over ten years ago, along with a full collection of Dinky, Lesney original model cars in original boxes , that had not been valued.. they took the lot and gave him £7000.00,

brother in law was the one to allow the sale and told me the next day, looked on the ring camera and have the guys on camera telling each other that they’ve struck gold. Showed it to the brother in law, his reply was, it’s gone now😡😡😡😡😡

I guess that is how they make their living. And unsuspecting family are happy to get a few quid for grandpa's old "junk".

Myford Super 7s are worth quite a bit these days, especially in good nick. I think you can look at past sales on eBay to get an idea, and various classifieds on this site and similar, and I think homeworkshop.org.uk. They seem to bring quite a bit more than the standard ML7.

And the accessories and tooling can add up to as much again, depending on what you have. Thing is classifying, advertising, packing and sending myriad small items take much time and effort. So might be worth setting up a package to sell as one lot with the lathe. Usual kit that goes with a lathe is the set of change gears, a four jaw chuck as well as the three jaw, fixed steady, travelling steady, tailstock chuck and tailstock centre. But y ou could add more and up the price a bit with milling slides etc etc.
