Hi there,

just thought I'd introduce myself & say hello. I'd better start off by stating from the outset that I am, in absolutely no way, an engineer. I do have an interest in metal work/engineering though & during one of the lockdowns I bought myself a Chinese mini-lathe. Not the best machine in the world but the best I could afford on my budget & the most suitable for the space available in my workshop (a double garage full of car (Reliant Scimitar SS1), many bikes & numerous tools.

I seem to be mainly making pens which I've given away as presents & occasionally sold. The profits from these pens won't allow me to retire early (unfortunately) but they do allow me to buy bits for the lathe & to buy metal to make the pens. I'm happiest working with brass but have machined aluminium, iron, steel & copper (although I found the copper very tricky to machine without the tool snagging on the workpiece).

Anyway I've joined the forum to gain a bit more knowledge & to find a project - beyond pens - which may be within the scope of my meagre talents!!

Cheers
Paul

Hi Paul,

Welcome to the forum. The mini-lathe should be able to handle larger work than making pens, I know of one who uses a Unimat 3 to make pens.
