Gentlemen. I am refurbing a Mk. 2 Progress Model 1 bench drill.

It has the MT No. 1 taper and No. 6J nose for the chuck. In the spindle there is a drift slot and a knurled threaded ring under that. Is this ring for locking down on something, or for bearing down on the chuck for removal. The arbor tang does not extend into the drift slot? How then to remove the arbor and chuck please?

Do not have double wedge set. If that is the method. But could make.

Hello Rod,

You are correct in your assessment, the ring is used to push off the chuck when fitted to the Jacob taper

I would extend the arbour tang so that you can use a drift to separate the Morse tapers

My drill is the New Progress #1 which only has the knurled ring for chuck release

Regards

Brian
