Questions about Wickes Wet 'n' Dry Vacuum and Blower

I should be grateful for some help here.

This shop vac had served me well for many tears until recently when the motor cut out momentarily shortly after switch on and I noticed a tiny bit of smoke at the site of the external on/off rocker switch (I hastily switched off).

I dismantled the machine and tested the motor by connecting directly to the mains; this seemed to work OK.

I then tested the switch with a multimeter; in the on position both pairs of contacts measured nil resistance.

I don't know how to test the capacitor but could see no obvious sign of failure. This component is rated at 275VAC and 0.22 µF; again, I don't know the type of capacitor concerned. I assume that the capacitor, which is wired across the switched side of the mains, is there just to prevent electrical interference ie not functionally essential (although I would not wish to upset the neighbours).

Can someone with relevant expertise comment, please? I think I may be able to locate a suitable replacement switch on eBay where there are also capacitors to be found but I am not sure how to specify the latter.

Incidentally, as this is an essential piece of workshop equipment I have today bought the equivalent new version but am reluctant to add the old one to landfill if it can be repaired.

I think you are correct, that capacitor is for interference suppression and the motor will work just as well if you remove it. As you say your nice friendly neighbours might object if your cause TVI from the sparking motor brushes. You can buy replacement from Farnell, ESR, Rapid and several other firms. Regarding test the capacitor, don't bother as it should be tested at mains working voltage and they are not expensive. John
