Hi

Hoping to find some fellow hobbymat md65 owners to help me resolve an issue. I obtained the lathe a couple of years ago and I'm having some issues with the machine. please take a look at this video and maybe someone with more experience with this lathe can help.

Difficult to say exactly what is going on. There should be a thrust race (33) and a collar (8) held in place with a taper pin. This locates the headstock end of the leadscrew. The tailstock end is located by the hand wheel. There is a simple dog clutch to connect the change gears.

I think you will find the pin (part number 28 on the drawing above) has sheared. I had a similar issue with mine many years ago and I can't remember the precise details but I don't think the pin is a taper pin, I think on mine it was parallel. Either way from the movement I would say yours is broke!

Paul.

Looks like you are also missing the dog clutch which is a keyed sliding fit on the end of the leadscrew. The collar pin could be broken too which would account for the excess play.

Here's a bad photo of my MD65 if it helps?
