Hi,

I am making Myfordsboy's 2.5" boiler. On the drawings is says use brass for the bushes. On the video he says use bronze.

I am also thinking of making all the other fittings from brass.

How much of an issue is it to use brass instead of bronze for boiler fittings, considering this will only be fired a few times.

Thanks

Adrian

I would never use brass in a boiler. I've had brass fittings dezincify and snap off! You say it will only be fired a few times, but what happens after you've gone and somebody else starts to use it?

Cost isn't really that different; it's just a bit more difficult to machine, so I would sternly advise bronze.

As a boiler inspector, I would refuse to certify a boiler with brass bushes in it.

Hmm, that is what I thought.

So from my usual suppliers I have a choice, Colphos 90, PB 102, SAE660

Which would be the best to use?

PB102 is best. As i recollect Colphos 90 is easier to work due to it having a lead content (all be it very low %) however if it is overheated when silver soldering or brazing the lead can attempt to escape!
