No doubt this subject has come up before.I have acquired an unused Myford turret for mounting on the cross slide, what is the recommended hole size for the tools and what is the hole size, depth and offset for the clamping bolts. Also is it best to wind the cross slide in as far as it will go to mount the turret . Any help would be most welcome

5/8 or 16mm for the tool holes, cannot help with offset for split cotters but easy enough to work out from a simple sketch. No need to wind cross slide right in just centre turret with 5/8 bar held in collet or chuck and lock cross slide.

Raised the question of how you centralise such turrets with "one who knows about such things" many years ago and was told that a setting spacer to define the cross slide position was considered good practice. How the spacer was used and whether its practical on a Myford I have long forgotten.

I imagine I was asking about possibly using one on a SouthBend 9" but the idea went no further.

If possible its better to arrange things so that the turret can be set up without removing a job from the chuck. Although turrets are normally associated with end on working there is no reason why you can't use normal style boring and similar tools in the turret by traversing the cross slide in the usual way to apply cuts.

Thank you both for your comments, they have given me food for thought.
