Hi ..

The details for the snifting valve for my large boiler Tich is missing from the sheet plans and also not covered in "the book".

I am quite new to all of this and have never seen a snifting valve Not even sure where it is best mounted .. when it has been made!

Is anybody able to give me some help with what the internal details look like???

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Cheers Mike

There is a chapter on safety valves, relief valves and snifting valves in "LBSC's Shop Shed & Road" (ISBN 1857611217) that might help (I don't know if the same chapter exists in the 1929 edition or "The Live Steam Book". The valves drawn and described are for 2 1/2" gauge locos, but it might be a start.

There is a very brief mention of the snifting valve in the additional magazine articles that describe LBSC's own Tich where he describes an issue with the snifting valve on his own loco "There was a blow at the snifting valve that projects through the smokebox so I took it off and found a chip of metal in it." but no drawing of the snifiting valve itself or how to erect it.

Hi,

ME design for a 5" gauge version to illustrate features. The valve body is attached to the smokebox wall by the 3/8" thread using a suitable nut.The 5/16" thread is piped to the wet header. The valve allows air to be drawn into the header when the regulator is shut whilst the loco coasts. Steam shuts the valve when the regulator is opened.

Its positioning can be anywhere convenient.
