Pultra backlash

Hi. I've just bought a Pultra 17/70 which, although generally in lovely condition, has a lot of backlash in the slides. I'm told this can be taken up by adjustment of split nuts but I'm having difficulty getting at them. I'm assuming that it's like my Myford, and that to take it apart you just wind it off it's threads, but the toolpost slide gets very stiff as I approach the end, and the crosslide has a plate at the end that would need to be removed first, it's retaining screws have well mashed heads. I don't want to get brutal if I don't have to so any advise on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Rob

I have just sent you a private message. I have a parts diagram that might help you.
