Bandsaw blade jig

Hi all, decided to knock up a jig for silver soldering my bandsaw blades.

Having seen a few types ont web I decided to forego screw type clamps and try out a magnetic hold down to reduce chance of the blade moving during tightening.

A pair of brass hinges were fitted to a base plate, in line with each other to hold the blade end.

Magnets were glued to the base and a steel handle on each hinge acted as the closer.

It works well and I can solder blades much more quickly now.

Brilliant, the use of the hinges is a bit of superb lateral thinking!

Thank you guys, curiously enough I modeled it on an 8mm film splicing clamp my dad used to use. Very similar idea to good the cut ends of film steady for splicing.

The magnets are a great idea as there is no tightening of ckamp screws etc, just close and hold.

I've also made a wooden jig to hold the soldered blade on for cleaning up and filing.

Do you suffer with any problems with respect to the heat of the soldering affecting the hardness/temper of the blade material? Just asking because I can see this as a great way to save on blade costs by making your own from coils rather than paying for manufactured to length.

Hi Phil,

When I used to use a bandsaw welder the weld area got much hotter, then it needed annealing to take away the brittle ness this caused. Obviously softens the teeth in the area of the weld.

Post silver soldering I just let the blade cool naturally before cleaning it up and using it.

Not had any problems so far and I'm buying in some more coil stock on the back of my results.
