I hope one of the Optics Experts can help me.

I have one of these: - a Binocular microscope - it is in good working order, although I need to strip and clean - there is evidence of dust internally.

The focal point is around 100mm below the bottom lenses. It also has a neat zoom capability which when used still keeps the view in nice focus.

I wish to use this to assist optical alignment of drill cutting edges in preparation of grinding, using the 5C collet arrangement I posted on the MEW forum previously.

A photo of a drill in the collet/square block is last in the photos. How could I go about adding a graticule line in the view, focused at the microscope focal plane? This so that it can be used to center on the drill point, and to align the cutting edges with the line, ie, parallel to either the horizontal or vertical edges of the collet block

I presume the line ( a piece of spiders web??) would need to be stretched across one of the eye piece view lines, maybe at the focal point of the eye piece? - However, if that is so, there does not seem to be enough length inside the device's body to place the line there.. I have spent a few hours digging on the net, but have not found comfort yet...The graticule is fine in one eye view only - the brain seems to sort that.

Please...

Thanks,

Joe

A graticule along the line of the Square's vertical edge is desired - can be horizontal or vertical.

Thank you Robert. Just what was needed!

I did a quick, very crude test - inserted a ring of plastic with a 0.1mm diameter copper wire stretched across and moved the ring up and down till the wire was nicely focused and it works well. Now looking for some spiders..

Thanks again!

Joe

Through view - not properly focused on the background text, but the wire is nice and sharp! A taut bit of spider web will work fine for my drill jig.
