![]() 388 forum posts 137 photos | I modified my Myford VM D milling attachment so it is now positioned at the rear of the lathe bed and is powered by it's own 1/2 hp 3 phase motor. This works well and I can take quite decent cuts with it however today I noticed (not till it was too late!) that a heavy cut using an end mill caused the quill to be partly pulled out of the head casting! This is normally retained by a plastic hand operated lever, which has always seemed quite springy in use. Needless to say this is now being changed for a length of studding with a proper nut on to prevent any future 'accidents'! Alan |

32 forum posts | hi alan i,m new to the forum , i find your post about the vmd mill attachment very interesting, i have just been given a ml10 lathe with the vmd attachment ,i,m stuck because i need the the coupling to connect to the lathe spindle to the mill do you have any measurements for one? if i cant get the coupling , your idea sounds great for fitting a motor what size motor did you use . hope you can help cheers john |

![]() 1376 forum posts 10 photos | I had one of these mills and I believe the couplings were bought in by Myford from an outside supplier and still available from the original manufacturer but I forget who. Someone should be along to tell you shortly. |

From memory all it is is about a 4 inch length of 2 inch bar one end has a female thread to fit the mandrel the other has a slot across it to drive the 2 pegs that are the VMD drive pulley. I can't post photos from my phone but have generated a VMD album with some photos of my mod. I am not blessed with a lot of workshop space which is why I bought the milling attachment in the first place, it worked well but I got fed up with fitting/removing it from the lathe, it works a treat! Underneath my drip tray I fitted a sheet of 8mm mild steel as a base for my attachment. On the rear of the lathe bed I secured (using the tapped holes) a length of 2 inch by 3 inch bar, to this towards the centre is bolted a section of 6 inch by 3 inch box section which is all supported by studding down to the sheet metal under the drip tray - so none of the weight 'hangs' off the rear of the bed. I then built up sections on top of the box section to simulate the lathe bed for securing the VMD to. The photos might show this better than my explanation! In use I can slacken the VMD fixings and slide it forward so the quill can be over the centreline of the bed, then slide it rearwards, out of the way when turning. I have found though that I normally leave it in the rearward position most of the time. I fitted a toothed pulley to the VMD pulley and this is driven from a 0.5 hp 3 phase motor controlled from a VFD If you have a look at the photos I think it will understandable! Alan |
