Super seven spindle extension tube.

The Myford big bore gear train cover has a removable disc to allow long lengths to pass through it. Unlike earlier lathes the hollow spindle does not project enough to jettison swarf clear of the cover. If it goes unnoticed the swarf drops inside to be munched by the gears.

This is my solution, easily accomplished, as my lathe already has the black finish threaded collar shown. There are two opposing holes for a 'c' or peg spanner.

What is this collar intended for and what is the significance of the figures on the spindle ? Manufacturing tolerance or error maybe.

I think you just discovered! You're lucky - I didn't get one with mine. I'll check to see if I have a number scratched - was your lathe new or "pre-owned"?

I am the second owner John, I repatriated this one from Canada. It has the North American gearbox fitted.

The gear train cover on my big bore machine has a cast-in counterbore around the hole for the spindle to ensure the swarf doesn't fall onto the gears. The flanged collar on the left hand end of the spindle, supplied with the lathe, makes sure the swarf falls clear. Is yours not the same? I can't tell from your photos. Here's mine...

I just reduced to O/D slightly on a piece of grey plastic overflow pipe and pushed that up the bore on my ML7R,

Cost negligible and time ditto. It is not as nice looking at those shown but it is entirely practical.

Yes mine is the same Andrew. It looks like you leave off the steel cover disc on yours and run it open. When boring, it easy to forget to remove the disc and in goes the swarf.

I made the alloy cover to provide closer protection around the spindle.

Brian, my previous lathe was an ML7R and the spindle projected far enough through the cover. I never needed to extend it. I thought about the pipe up the hole as you have done. It is easy to get carried away. Sledge hammers and wall nuts.
