Tom Senior Major milling machine ... gib or jib .. adjusting

Thought I knew the answer ...

Most people spell it as "gib" but the Tom Senior manual has "jib" [which I always thought was on a yacht ...] .

More to the point - I've just had the table and Vees reground and refitted it.

Any advice on adjusting gibs (or jibs) ?

Can't help with the adjustment but the dictionary defines:-

Gib - A wood or metal bolt, wedge, or pin for holding part of a machine or structure in place, usually adjusted by a screw or key.

Jib - 1. A triangular staysail set forward of the mast. 2. The projecting arm of a crane.

Someone once remarked that they liked the cut of my gib but to date havn't been able to find my adjustment screw anywhere 😁

Interesting ... all the more puzzling then that Tom Senior manual has BOTH !

On the Knee Assembly page it has "gib".

On the Compound Table description it says "jib". Looks like it was an uncorrected typo.

Mick. Ha Ha. But surely the commentator would have spelt it "jib" ? 

All a bit confusing ... ( I wonder what the mercans would call it ...)

I have always said gib as though it were spelt with a J, some seem to prefer a hard g though. If you have reground the Vs then I would check the gib strips with blue against a surface plate. If the surface is not flat and the strip not straight then it is going to make adjustment difficult. The holy grail is smooth movement and no shake so start with a straight smooth strip and take your time. My crosslide was a b****r to adjust so I took the gib out for a close look, if you know a dog who needs a new hind leg I have one.
