Hi I'm a total novice to lathes but you have to start sometime some where, so I'm hoping to tap into some of the knowledge on this forum tips tricks what to buy every little helps

Hi there. I suggest you put your location in your profile as it helps people relate to some queries which are rather dependent on access to materials, shows, etc. Buying a lathe in the Hebrides is rather different from Nottingham.

Also read all the posts from the last year at least on the forum so that you have an idea of what people are talking about. You will learn a lot about all aspects of machining as almost all the questions have bee asked already. If possible go along to your nearest club where you may be able to pick up some bargains and some old copies of Model Engineer. Reading the articles while watching TV is a great way to learn.

Welcome to the forum.

"read all the posts from the last year " - I wouldn't try and read them all! We're up to nearly 8,000 threads so far this year, goodness knows how many posts...!

<edit> I do - 141,000 posts, but that includes any deleted ones!

There's a search box that works well on the home page, but if you can't find what you need don't be afraid to ask.

Hi guys cheers for all the replies and advice nice to be on a forum where people are actually helpful. As for location I'm from isle of sheppey in kent so not far off the Hebrides lol
