30 forum posts 1 photos | i have started building a shand mason fire engine westbury plans i have the 6 sheets of drawings and the castings. on sheet 4 there is a syphon box which appears from the photos to fit on the rear of the steam box. i cannot work out what it does and where do the pipes from the bottom of this box go to . some photos on the net show the pipes going to the crank bearing the drawing only show 1/16 oil holes no pipes where can i buy the suction and discharge (fire hose) or what can i make them from regards tom hardy |

You are corect the box contains oil and 3 pipes go from the bottom and go to the crank bearings, if I remember correctly I put string in the pipes to act as wicks. This how I made my suction/discharge hoses:
I length of plastic tube ( car windscreen washer type) slide a rod of steel/brass down the bore. mounted on the lathe, one end in chuck other supported by a tailstock centre then set the lathe to say 8 tpi screw cutting then as if winding a spring wrap a thin wire along the length of the tube remove from the lathe cover with white heat shrink sleeving and heat using a hot air gun. The end result looks really good with the wire looking like the ribs of the hoses. Hope that makes sense? If not I will try again.
Do you have a copy of the build article from Model Engineer mag? If not I have scans of them & could put them on disc for you.

30 forum posts 1 photos | thank you ian j i will try to make the suction hose this way does the discharge hose be the same as i think it lays flat i am chasing the articles in model engineer so if you have copies that would be great tom |
