I want to buy small aluminium rod and have the ends say 2mm dia rivetted. I cant use normal rivets because I need a thicker center section.

So what grade alloy do I need? and is that fairly common i.e my local stockist should have it?

I think commercial rivets are pure aluminium, most aluminium alloys tend to work harden so pure soft aluminium would be most suitable as I think the work hardening alloys would tend to split or crack.

Aluminium rivets are made in many different compositions, including pure aluminium. Personally I'd not use that as it is far too soft.

I presume you are wanting a thicker rod with the ends turned down to say 2 or 3 mm then these ends are going to be formed like a rivet to secure the rod between two plates?

Just get a piece of 6082 or 6063, preferably in the T4 condition. This means it is not fully hardened so when you form the ends they won't split.

The T6 condition is the most commonly available though, and to be honest I think it would still be OK to form and would not split.
