I have acquired a Lenze vfd model EVF8202-E along with the plug-in keypad E82ZBC. This is a bit of a long shot as they are not so common as some other makes, but I need a bit of advice on setting it up - I've wired it up to the 3/4hp motor on the Boxford shaper but when switched on the keypad flashes with 'init' - there is no mention of this as an error code in any of the manuals I've looked at.

With the keypad removed the led's show that the unit is on and ready to go.

I was hoping to be able to control it with the keypad, but as this is being unco-operative do I now have to connect up all the low-voltage control wiring (ie on, fwd/rev, potentiometer etc? And if anyone can tell me what the keypad error code means I would be very grateful.

Are you sure you have the correct controller keypad? Should be EMZ 8201BB. Im just mentioning as i have no experience of Lenze inverter drives but know that manufacturers often have several model specific keypads.

Also on inverters you often have to set them to to use different input types ,though they may just default to using the onboard keyboard potentiometer , cant remember.

"init" is probably short for "initialise" and isn't an error as such.

The persistence of the message may be indicating that the VFD's microcontroller has got stuck doing it's pre-flight checks. It could be that initialisation can't complete because some essential part of the control wiring is missing . Or as Mark suggests it might not be able to initialise with the wrong keypad.

I would try lashing up the control wiring to see if that makes a difference.

I've now done yet another trawl through the internet for more lenze manuals - very confusing as there seem to be two different 8200 ranges, along with several different manuals for each range, but I have at last found one which I think actually applies to mine - and it seems that Mark is correct in telling me that the supplied keypad is the wrong one. A bit of a shame as even secondhand on eBay they fetch big money.

It had crossed my mind that there was a keypad fault, and I've just found an obscure reference linking the init fault with mention of the set point (Lenzes term for the frequency setting, obviously done with the potentiometer) - all of which agrees with Duffers post.

I've already connected up the start and fwd/rev control wires but don't have a pot handy - I'll try and get one tomorrow and see if having that wired in allows it to get the motor running. The manual states that the default setup will run a 4 pole 1440 rpm motor, so I'll have to hope that it still has the default parameters set up - if not then I'm going to be stuffed without a working keypad!

Thanks to both, it's cleared my thinking a bit - hopefully an update tomorrow.

Shame as thats one pricey keypad, i thought some other makers keypads were expensive . Saw one US$500 on ebay.

Can you not set up through a computer with a software disk and cable??

Partial success - a quick trip to Maplins for a 4k7 pot which I wired in and the inverter works I'm relieved to say - this is the first time I have had the shaper running since I bought it in January. The keypad still doesn't work though, I was hoping the init error was due to not having a potentiometer but that was a wish too far!

There's still a (very slim) chance I can get the correct keypad, and you're right when you suggest a pc and software as the alternative (but I have no idea how much that costs, probably around 500$!). I'll check the motor speed and keep an eye on its' temperature but I have no reason to suspect any of the parameters are too far off for my purposes, and at least I'll be able to use the shaper.

Mark and Duffer, Thanks for the help.
