Hi,

Was I expecting too much from a new slitting saw?

I've used a slitting saw for the first time today, it's 3" x 2mm x 64T, it was cutting BMS 3/4" deep x 1/2" thick running at about 800 - 950 RPM, lubricated with oil.

The saw has become blunt before the end of the cut, would a larger diameter saw have been a better bet?

Are there different grades of slitting saws available?

Many thanks for any advice.

Just uploaded photo of the set up.

Les

They are best run a lot slower than that, would you turn 3" stock at that speed on the lathe?

Thanks Jason, we live and learn.

About 100 RPM?

Cutting speed rule of thumb for HSS when cutting mild steel is:

400 divided by the diameter in inches.

So a 4" slitting saw would run at 400/4 = 100rpm.

A 2" job would run at 400/2 = 200 rpm.

So 3" should be good at 100rpm to be safe, or maybe up to 150rpm.

Double these speeds for brass or aluminium.
