HI, All.

My trusty Dremel 4000 has started to emit grey smoke and a nasty smell.

I expect the cause is very dodgy bushes (it's been declining for a while).

I've found some bushes, but I'm blowed if I can work out how to replace them. all the guides indicate that the caps just screw off, but mine have no slots. If I put one in I can turn the cap fairly easily, but it does not come off.

I've tried to prise it off, but either I'm being too gentle (imagine that from a novice model engineer!) or I'm doing the wrong thing.

Any ideas on this?

Iain

Do you mean brush rather than bush? I think the brush covers are captive in the housing, and you get them out by splitting the two halves of the main body. Exploded diagram here, not very good quality so I might be wrong **LINK**

Hi, Grizzly

Neither Google nor You Tube have availed me on this one.

Steve - You appear to be right. I've taken it apart.and the brushes (sorry for my misspelling) work as you indicated. However, they appear in good order, so I'm not right sure why the smoke .

I've got some on order so let's see what happens after I replace them.

For what it's worth. I took it apart. cleaned the armature and put it back together and there's now no smoke and it seems to work fine. The only indication of something wrong is that one of the bRushes (with an 'R' was chipped.

Both have plenty of material left so I'm hoping it will work until I break it in a different and interesting way...

They do not like any oil accidently getting on the armature or brushes.
