Measuring splines

Can anyone tell me how to measure a spline on a round shaft, I know I can measure the od of the shaft and count the number of splines but it is the v angle and the flat at the bottom I am stuck with, can you buy a pitch gauge for this like on threads, also where would you buy a cutter for this.

Can you tell us what they are for. You can have vee splines, straight sided splines and involute splines.

Doesn't sound like vee spline or straight sided serrations as they are known as these are a full vee, i.e. no flat.

Straight sided splines as the name implies has straight sides and usually a rounded bottom equal to the diameter of the base circle.

Involute splines are basically internal stubby gear teeth with rounded sides.

Good news is these have been around for ages and plenty of info on them, tables etc.

I am making a custom driveshaft that is picking up an internal spline on a Yamaha, I know of the different types of splines but don’t seem to be able to find any information on them, I will post a picture of the shaft tomorrow,

The outside diameter of the shaft is 17.75mm and it has 16 splines, but I don't seem able to post a picture.

I am more interested in how you measure them and where I would buy cutters from

A lot of the automotive splines are not cut with a conventional cutter at all. Your only chance is to take a casting of the existing spine, slice the casting and make an image on a shadowgraph. With a 20x or 50x lens. Then get hss or carbide and make one to match. You can find rollers or pins that fit into the existing spline as a comparator like measuring threads, but your measuring splines. Neil
