where to start the tooth cut

![]() 19226 forum posts 749 photos 86 articles | Hi Tony, I assume you are cutting constant depth bevels. In practice it's not critical, but if you can arrange it so that all the cuts start from the small end of the gear (and have this facing outwards for visibility, if mounted on a stub mandrel in a chuck). This is because all three (or both if you are brave) cuts pass through the same point at the small end and it should be easy to judge if the cutter is too high or low when you do the 'blank rol'l and reset the cutter, simply by offering the stationary cutter up to the small end. 3 forum posts | Thanks Neil, To be honest Im struggling a bit ! I am making a differencial for a buggy and have never cut bevel gears before, and the maths for the teeth and cutter size is new to me. Thanks for your help, Tony |

3 forum posts | Hi Neil, they need to be 45 deg with a pitch dia at the small end of 1.000 I thought 20 teeth would be ok and have a 26-35 cutter, I am using a vertical mill and a dividing head. Thanks. |
