Hello, I was wondering if anyone out there happens to have a manual for the Myford VM-C. I have a machine that has hardly been used. It was dismantled to be moved and the gib strips for the vertical (Z) table slide are lost. If anyone has the drawing or dimensions or is willing to measure their strips that would be a great help.

Hello Tony,

I can't help you directly but seeing there had been 0 replies I had to take a look.

Have you tried Tony Griffiths at www.lathes.co.uk

He operates a splendid machine tool archive and sells manuals

Regards

Brian

Hi Robert

Try David Anchell at Quillstar he has a stock of various spares for both Myford lathes and mills.

My friend has a well used VMC and a few years ago when he needed a new feed nut he took his old one to Warco and they found a match in their spares. The old Myford in Nottingham he found most unhelpful even though the machine was not very old at the time. Might be worth a phone call to Warco or Chester who sell VMC clones.

The Myford VMC was supplied to Myford's by two different firms in Taiwan. Early machines were extremely well made, later machines from another supplier in Taiwan were not so good.

You will be extremely lucky if you obtain a Gib strip. It will of course need scraping to suit the machine. As usually the Gib is supplied over length for this purpose.

I have made them from cast iron in the past. Using drill shanks it is easy to determine the taper. By inserting the drill shanks at each end of the casting with the knee pushed hard against the master dovetail. I used a largish Shaping Machine to make my Gibs. Clocking along the length of the Gib to get the desired taper using the Ram of the Shaper.

The last operation is using normal and inverted dovetail cutters to form the correct Gib profile. Care needs to be exercised to ensure the master dovetail surface of the Gib is the reference surface for the dovetail cutters. Otherwise it will be time to start again.

Regards

Gray,
