Why are gas struts on mini mill conversions not rated to fully lift the head?

No problem. Yes, just cut the scales with a hacksaw.

I think I mounted the x-axis one on staggered brackets just to give a bit more travel on the axis before the reader unit hit the ends. Can't remember to be honest. Either way, as I said, you just saw the scales to whatever length you need and the end brackets supplied clamp them solidly in place.

Apologies - I know all of this is off-topic - but the other modification I made to the SX2P was to fit thrust bearings to the x & y stages. It completely transformed the feel of the machine in terms of smoothness, turning effort and reducing backlash:

Fitted the adjustable strut today, and on compressing it slightly it immediately began hissing and leaking fluid from around the ram. This stopped when returned to fully extended, so it seems like the piston itself is plugging a leak at the seal end. Clearly not fit for purpose, so I’m awaiting advice from the supplier. To be honest with the amount of excess pressure It’s got, I’m now a bit reluctant to go anywhere near the thing.

If it’s not one thing it’s another.
