754 forum posts 2 photos | On the WM250V the leadscrew powers the feeds as well as screwcutting. There's a worm in the apron, driven by a leadscrew keyway, that passes the drive to the apron gearbox, which is basically only able to apply it to crossslide or saddle, depending on the feed lever setting. So I've always assumed the slight extra noise comes from the apron gearbox. That wouldn't be under load in screwcutting. My lathe is the WM250 without the powered cross feed. I suspect the extra load driving the carriage is what's making the gear train a little noisier.

2805 forum posts 219 photos | I suppose mechanical noise is most annoying when it indicates a problem. It follows that it can be beneficial to listen to your lathe and heed its complaints. |
