I don't think it was by chance that Myford commisioned the VMB/VMC mills but as a compliment to the ML7 and the Super 7 so whilst I am not suggesting those mills and only those mills they will be a good yardstick for anything else you come across. I have a VMC and have been very pleased with it. Especially as I picked it up for £500 when the Lab decomissioned it. I had my eye on a Centec but someone beat me to it.

regards Martin

Thanks guys.

I'll let you know what I end up with. My backstop is the Seig - but some great suggestions that have helped me better understand the sort of alternatives on the market so I can better conduct a search.

Bit of bad news - my Myford purchase has just fallen through, the vendor has suddenly decided not to sell after all, thankfully he returned my deposit. However, a very nice Warco WM-180 popped up at an exceptionally good price so I've grabbed that for now - should have a bit more stability than the smaller Real-Bull mini lathe it replaces and will hold the fort for a good while until the next Myford/Boxford or Colchester comes around. The nice silver lining is that most of the additional tooling and accessories I had for the mini-lathe will transfer over - letting me learn for a little longer without breaking the bank.
