2 forum posts | Greetings peeps, I have just become the proud owner of an MD65 courtesy of ebay. I am in the processes of cleaning it up as it was unused for over 5 years. I have read that screw cutting is bit hairy unless you have the slow speed mod, since that would almost double what I have paid I was wondering if its practical to use a voltage regulator to slow the speed of the motor like this one Would anyone be able to offers some words of encouragement or caution on the matter ?

![]() 244 forum posts 105 photos | As you say screwcutting takes care but it is possible. The voltage regulator you show will not work with an induction motor as fitted to the MD65. The slow speed system helps but is not the complete answer. The problem is the stopping time, the standard motor has quite high inertia and takes a while to run down when just taking a light cut. Two possible solutions: 1) Make a handle to fit in the back of the spindle and turn by hand for screwcutting. 2) Change the drive to a 3 phase motor and inverter as described here:

However, it's also possible to end up with a huge pile of junk taking all the available space, leaving no room for doing anything You will only ever use 10% of the junk you accumulate. Trouble is a) you don't know which 10% you are going to use until you need it! b) The stuff you need now is always in the stuff you disposed of last week to make space! |

2 forum posts | Roger, thanks for the info on the motor, think the handle option is more in price bracket. |

As you are living in Luxemburg, try RC Machines: Thanks Gep, I go visit there from time to time, a pleasant place! It's nice to walk around and check out their model collection, or have a look at all the old heavy machines they sell in the second-hand area of their store. Any similar stores in the Netherlands? We like to take a trip to NL from time to time. Cheers Gene |
