Clue - for the date of manufacture, look at the supplied 3-jaw chuck, these often do have the year on, at least with older mini lathes. Neil

Your machine was born at SIEG in 1996, serial number 1278. At the time, your motor was sourced from an outside component supplier, and now it is produced in-house. In theory, a new C2 motor should be an equivalent replacement. However, ARC's policy of non-return of electrical component spares such as this, still stands. Our reasons are based on a range of factors which we do not care to disclose - and we say this with the greatest of respect, pre-sale. Secondly, if you purchase a hobby machine electrical spare as a B2B purchase (i.e. without VAT), it is considered to be a business sale of a hobby machine electrical spare - which is not rated or classed for business use, and additional exclusion terms will apply. At the check-out there is a provision for EU B2B customers to place an order without VAT, by following the process stated on our website. Once the order comes through, additional VAT checks are made, as, for security reasons, we only ship to VAT registered address. Provided this process is okay, and because your requirement is for a motor (or control board), ARC will send you an additional email asking you to accept our exclusion terms. Once you accept the terms by return email, the order is dispatched. It may seem that ARCs policies on motors and circuit boards are a bit strong. These apply mainly to supply of such spares to customers who have not made the initial purchase of the machine from ARC. This policy is born out of experience. Whilst ARC is happy to serve and is grateful for such orders, it is difficult to ascertain parentage of such machines, causes of failure, and ability of person to fix such problems. Many such 'broken' or 'damaged' machines have turned up in probates and auction sites, where the previous owner has either died, or put up said machine for sale for other reasons. The new owner purchases such a machine at very low cost, and wishes to fix it. In the fixing process, either a wrong motor/board is purchased, and/or damaged in the fixing process. ARCs prices are very competitive, but it is difficult for ARC to consider returns for these spares, as often it was found that such components were damaged upon return. As a result, this policy was born. This policy may be difficult for some to consider. We understand and respect this view. Keeping the above in mind, if npu finds difficulty in considering ARCs policy, or if he finds difficulty in going through the on-line purchase process, we understand, and we are happy to direct him to the other distributors mentioned in Jasons link. Now that it is clearer that it is a C2 machine made by SIEG, npu can consider and make his choice for where he purchases the spare from. Ketan at ARC

![]() 19226 forum posts 749 photos 86 articles | So mine was 1435 of 1999? Would make sense it was an early 1999 machine as teh original chuck is marked 1998 and I bought it in Machine Mart as a customer return in 1999. Neil |

npu, the ARC motor in Ketans link certainly looks the same as yours and you can also check the motor details (sizes etc) in the link. The only thing I noticed is the ARC motor is 250 watt whilst your lathe label quotes 400 watts but that could be just wishful thinking by the manufacturer at the time. Hi Ron, Just for clarification, it is 'the label manufacturer' who asked his sub-contract manufacturer - SIEG to put the watts on the label as you see in the picture provided. SIEG - the original manufacturer has always stated 'output' power as 250 watt for their original C2 mini-lathe spare part. The 'manufacturer' in the picture chose to call it 400 watt, based on some kind of interpretation by him of 'input' power. Similarly, the 'manufacturer' - Clarke - Machine Mart, chose to specify the same motor as 300 watt. Neither state that it is their interpretation of 'input power'. Excluding Axminister-SIEG range, many of the other 'manufacturers' of these type of machines use the same 'marketing philosophy'. Ketan at ARC. |

![]() 2320 forum posts 452 photos | Hi Ketan, it did cross my mind that the label could be based on input power, I know you always quote output power for your machines, it would be better if all suppliers did the same. My CJ18 (brushed motor) lathe is listed as 500 watt and a couple of recent tests have shown it to be not too bad for power but it wouldnt surprise me at all to find its output is more in the region of 350-400 watts. |

14 forum posts | thanks Ketan, for the clarification and data on my machine. i was sure that the number states for a date of manufacture. regarding the return policy, i have no problems with this and i fully understand Your practice. however, this is an ARC politics and it can be discussed if it is the best one or not... i personally think that a politic which is more customer friendly will result in greater profit for the seller in a long term. but we all know that there are a lot of strange customers You have to deal with them... lidel in croatia have a practice to put a 3 year guarantee on all hobby equipment they sell- bring the tool and bill back, you get the money. i am sure that this is a wise marketing practice! regarding VAT free, it will be a pity for me not to use this ability. i run a business, and a state provided me with this ability to purchase tools used for servicing equipment i use at work. a mini lathe is a nice tool, but this is a hobby tool that is not intended for prolonged use in metal working environment. when you push it hard, you see what happen (a boroken motor |
