Hi Aitken, I am pretty sorethat this one is on a woodruff key.The spindle is removed from this end towards the headstock spindle, Have you freed off the pullies and bull gear grub screws?

Bit late now but will check mine in the morning and post then.

Cheers,

Martin

Thanks for the reply Martin. I did have a thought it was maybe on a small key but ijust couldnt make out if it did or not. Just to clarify it knocks through from the rear towards the front after everything attached to it such as bullwheel has screws removed?

Hi All,

Had a go at the small gear that had a broken tooth; cut a small piece off of an old plane cutter and wedged it in positon with lots of new No5 flux made with meths which set solid holding the piece in position; dropped a couple of small pieces of brazing rod either side then heated with my oxy acetylene torch (first time I have ever used it!). Here is the result ready for some work with needle files. Will probably let the final buyer do this as my eyesight is not really up to it.

Pretty much done now so just a final clean up all round then ready to go.

Aitken, Correct about the spindle, do make sure that the bull wheel and pully cluster are really free, mine had a small burr on the spindle which was a bit of a problem, came from the graunched bullwheel locking grub screw. Also protect the lH spindle end and be gentle when tapping it out.

Cheers and Happy New Year to All!

Martin

Martin I meant to ask also, did you drill/tap to fit your small oilers? As you can see from

my previous pics mine only has small oil holes and the smallest oil cups I can find have a

1/8 bsp thread? Thanks

Aitken,

The lathe has now gone to a new home! The oilers just sat in the top holes, no threads!

Good luck with yours, I really enjoyed bringing this one back from the dead!

Cheers,

Martin

Hi Martin,

I am restoring a Grayson lathe and came across your posts, showing what looks to be the same model of lathe. It came to me mostly dismantled (having been sat in a garage for 20 years rusting) and I am relatively inexperienced with this type of machinery, so looking for photos/manuals etc as to how it should be reassembled and setup for different tasks. Do you have any more photos you could send me of the finished article please?
Thanks,

Jim

Jim
Are you aware of the detail on Grayson (and many other) lathes on archive website
http://www.lathes.co.uk/grayson/index.html
It also points you in the direction of a book, The Amateur's Lathe, avidly read by many.
