Thanks again guys. I have a few publications and have already downloaded a few related PDF file that I will eventually print. Nice to know you are all there for us rank beginners. Incidentally, if I haven't mentioned it I am primarily a wood turner but have always wanted to venture into the spinning of metal as well.

Ok, so I picked it up today. Bought it sight unseen based on your recommendations. Low and behold it included soooo much tooling I can hardly control myself. Sure there are a few bits that need replacing but set the motor in place and turned the switch and I am really impressed so now I have a crummy Chinese one for sale.!! Here's what come with it. I almost feel guilty taking it all for $100.00 Canadian but what the heck!!

So you should! You made out like a bandit. The vertical slide alone is worth double what you paid for the lathe. The range of accessories and tooling looks like the previous/original owner was someone who would have looked after the lathe. Well done indeed!

I'm in the process of cleaning and lightly oiling the ML7 but for some reason when reading the manual on line I can't seem to locate how to remove the 3 jaw chuck. I would like to install the 4 jaw to turns some square stock? Thanks in advance!

It unscrews (regular right hand thread. If it's tight, put a chuck key in and rap it with a bit of wood. If it's tighter than that, search this site for one of several threads on the topic.

Thanks Bandersnatch. I gripped a rod in the chuck and gave it a rap with a dead blow hammer and it came right off. I thought that was what was needed but wanted to be sure.

Be careful about using the back gear to lock the spindle when removing chucks - the backgear teeth shearing off is common on Myfords' dainty little gears. IIRC the manual recommends putting a wooden block on the rear shear and rotating the spindle backwards by pulling on the belts until a jaw contacts the block.

MEW last month or two carried an updated LH Sparey design for a spindle locking tool that is probably a worthwhile mod if you ever disassmeble the headstock so you can drill the extra hole in the bull gear for it.

Thanks Hopper. Because I also new to metal lathes I won't think of doing anything that I think is questionable. I am at heart a wood turner and have used this method lots of times to remove a stuck chuck BUT wanted to check with the experts. Opps!! Now that I think about it I am unsure if the back gears are engaged or not!!!! So far I am just using it the way I got it but I better check. Could have been I was just lucky. New to the forum and am unsure how to find Mew's updated design?

I did try turning the ends of a wrench I made yesterday for the 4 independent jaw chuck

I got with the deal and now am unsure of the quality of the lathe. Mind, it is just sitting on a piece of plywood, not bolted or fastened down and as I turned (at the slowest speed without back gears engaged) the cross slide seemed to move across the ways on each revolution.
