658 forum posts 236 photos | Bit of both I guess. It is currently my biggest tap so aside from the lathe it might also get used in other applications where a big thread is needed.
Also when I tried to die cut an m16 stud my fairly worn vice jaws wouldn't hold tight enough to grip the smooth round bar. Worked it out by adding 20mm to the length of the workpiece and filing flats for the vice to grip onto. Then once the threading was done I cut off the extra square section of the bar. A pipe vice might have worked as well. |

186 forum posts 3 photos | So now i ( dont?) know what i can use it for. I literally couldn't give the thing away. damn. Michael W There`s chap who posts on here, says he`s happy to dispose sooper adepts as ballast for his gate posts maybe he could lose it for you! was a bit of awhile ago now though, maybe he`s had enough S/adepts already! Neil`s not posted any thing of his adept of late, just wondering. Im with MichealG on this one, in a word No Though as Neil says can / could use die nut for finishing after screw cutting,..............b I have no 2 adept shaper does that qualify entry to the Adept owners club ? ...the spell checker cant spell shaper and i thought my spelling was bad !! Here yer go; die on the left is 1-1/4" BSW, the other is 1-1/2" BSF, both 3" diameter: Andrew Hi Andrew they are split dies as im sure you know , Rainbows states Die nuts hex sided things for use with a spanner, used for cleaning up damaged bolt threads..............b If you try cutting full thread with a dia nut they become split die nuts.........b Edited By bodge on 10/07/2016 08:17:51 |

![]() 785 forum posts 152 photos | Rainbows, Is this thread for your lathe spindle nose? If it is, then it really should be cut in a lathe. Although it's the register that governs the accuracy, I firmly believe the thread should also be cut accurately. If you have the means to single point it "partially " them you would also have the means to "fully " cut the thread, no need for any dies to clean it up as that can be done in the lathe. I have never needed or used dies to clean up any thread that i'm cutting. Having said that, we are all different and many would use a die to "clean up " others not. [ i'm one of the not's] Cheers. |

Well the split nut clearly shows it could be cut. So the answer is yes, i reckon you could do it. Hasn't anyone seen the sort of dies used for pipe threading before, they're huge. (Now those are probably just for cleaning/repair) But i don't think a 1" Dia. thread with a coarse pitch is too big a push in 2 passes. Michael W Edited By Michael Walters on 09/07/2016 17:14:54 Yes ive done stuff like that back in the days of iron pipes, diameter refers to the bore, threaded with pipe dies the big uns take a bit of turning on a manually operated die, the cutting teeth were inserts bit like a coventry die head but bigger, they never cut true concentric though, not much off just a few thou,( not good enough for what goes on here) but then they didnt have to be, just a bit of boss white and hemp to seal. I would screw cut on the lathe anything over 1/2 inch if possible............b I see i havent quite got the hang of this cutting and pasting mularky yet !!

Hi Andrew they are split dies as im sure you know , Rainbows states Die nuts hex sided things for use with a spanner, used for cleaning up damaged bolt threads.............. Oddly enough I did know that, and that die nuts are intended to clean up threads. In retrospect I don't know why I bothered posting; in future I'll use the time for something more useful. Andrew |
