Thread: Going to put companies out of business? |
22/09/2012 20:31:28 |
Interesting topic this, I can confirm one thing that additive layer manufacturing is not going to put any company out of buisness in the next 5 years despite the sales pitch, It will however allow lots of companies to start up selling snake oil. There are a few however that will trully break ground with their application of 3d printing I can see my own daughter making her on products using one to make toys or stuff in the next 5 years or so . Thread: Brightening old tired metal |
05/09/2012 22:58:45 |
How do you brighten old metal
for example if i have a machined finished that has just gotten old ,dull, not shiny as it would have been when originally machined I know polish and wire wool is no good as it removes metal is pickling the answer?

Thread: Super 7 motor pulley |
05/09/2012 21:27:19 |
I have one further question
It seems the new older super 7 has an incorrect pulley,For those not having read my previous post on the clutch its the early super 7 with the cast in oil reservoir in the headstock The motor shaft is half inch not 5/8" as on the later one and the odd thing is one of the dual speed pulleys seems to be correct ,the small diameter not the larger will keep the belt tensioned but the larger is nearly 3-1/2" diameter and the belt is basically flapping in the wind by a long long way,the countershaft pulley is correct though judging from photos, I dont think this is correct motor pulley and the other myford i have has a different set of pulleys all together so im unable to reference Does anyone have an idea what pulley i need Myford /RDG only have 5/8 pulleys so cannot supply one to be honest i like this old machine its got character and a headtock spindle which is indicates at 0.0002 so im thinking its not bad for a 62 year old machine
Once again thanks for the help |
Thread: The super 7 now in pieces but a bearing and clutch question |
30/08/2012 16:27:36 |
A quick up date parts are dissasemble by carefull persuasion with the hammer it seems the ball bearing race is a slightly smaller dia than the torrington needle race ...and so needs drifting out for a good 10mm phew

John absolute blinder!!!!
first page and i see what is stopping said shaft being removed ...time for a hammer. |
30/08/2012 11:42:38 |
John many thanks for that the moderator should make that info available somewhere? sticky
Tom yes theres nothing left to come out completely stripped of all the screws cone internal and external are both loose and the vee pulley is also loose up to a point sliding the shaft out toward the headstock will come out all the way nearly then seems to catch on the vee pulley and upll the lot together looking down the bore the shaft is clear of all the bearings (needle rollers) and probably could do with a tap,im only hesitant because it is a nice sliding fit and im questioning wy all of a sudden with maybe 75 mm left it stops solid ,its not a banding more a positive dead stop like a slide hammer? |
30/08/2012 07:56:15 |
Sorry ady I believe that's the new one my clutch is in the middle of the actual countershaft 4 pulley nest not the drive pulley it comes out nice and smooth tile a finger in a yoghurt but the stops dead and it feels like a solid not soft stop |
Thread: Setting angles |
29/08/2012 22:39:25 |
Hi chaps thanks for the tips and techniques,Completely honestly it was for setting up a vertical slide on the lathe i figured it might still involve a sine bar on its side so tu speak but was just wondering if there were any new tricks out there....always something to learn
That patented idea in the links was pretty interesting for a project and i did have a bit of a doh/ how simple is that once thor had posted a link ,funny how you dont think of stuff when its laid in a different axis Edited By mike mcdermid on 29/08/2012 22:44:16 |
Thread: The super 7 now in pieces but a bearing and clutch question |
29/08/2012 22:35:31 |
Ok so the super 7 now lies dismantled. Does anyone know the part numbers or bearing numbers for the rear angular contact bearings and where i can get some cheaper than 25 quid ea Secondly I cannot remove the clutch It is the old style clutch cone inside the pulley ,Will come out 90 percent of the way relatively easily then gets stuck solid right at the point where it feels like the shaft should be leaving the cone ie just enough not to come out rotating it makes no difference Im very surprised theres no woodfuff key in there to tie the clutch body to the shaft or should that be that there is a woodruff key and its become unseated just enough now to stop the outer clutch coming off any one ever had one to pieces? im now mystified and cannot find instruciones

Thread: Setting angles |

How would one precicely set an angle on a lathe top slide 15 degrees and so many minutes in "imperial" or 15.3 degrees in metric I would use a sine table on the mill but accuracy on the lathe has always puzzled me?

Thanks for the replies chaps I will look into drives direct CB as if what Mac says is correct I dont think I have the patience (or time) for trawling ebay or waiting for one to come up ,I'm assuming the switchgear is 3ph in the box on the lathe also for the milling head if so thats a headache?
Just been on ebay looking at inverters and thats a minefield in itself
I'm in Yorkshire Btw |
17/08/2012 20:19:46 |
I brought home today what i thought was a newer better machine Unfortunately its 3 phase (doh should have checked but at 750 quid it was a steal i think) I have a choice Replace the motor or buy an inverter neither excites me as im not electrically gifted Tbh i already have a super 7 but the bearings are showing their age I have emailed and tried telephoning Daz but to no avail so thats a bit of a non starter ,Poor chap must be run off his feet I was hoping to buy this plug it in and keep working but am that fed up now im thinking of selling them and buying chinese Any idea what a motor would cost for the V10 I hear the motor is smaller than normal framed motors or how difficult it is to wire in an inverter Otherwise its going in the classifieds in about 10 minutes
Any advice welcome |

Thread: Control board need to interface with SolidWorks |
07/08/2012 14:00:13 |
To go from Solidworks you need a SOLID MODEL output to a cam package then a post processor to write your g code Solidworks will no readily output cam profiles or g code unless you are using an embedded add in Delcam for solidworks HSM works etc are two i use that sit within the solidworks interface |
