Thread: Which WARCO LATHE any opinions ?

Posted by JasonB on 17/11/2012 13:23:12:

Both the bigger machines have power cross feed.

The 290 is really just the big bore 280VF that several others do and warco have added a DRO, I've had teh 280VF for about 4 years and am quite happy with it.

The main advantage of the 12 & 13" machines is they have a gap which ios handy if you are thinking of traction engiens but unlikely to be needed for Locos

3 phase and a VFD would give you variabl espeed but still have plenty of torque

Thanks J good points.

Personally to get the most bang for your buck I would go used, £3k could buy a very decent used Colchester or Harrison, is machine parking space an issue?

Paul

No not really, I have a decent amount of room.

Are you intent on new? Do you actually need a large turning diameter? How about considering a solid old toolroom lathe which would make a nice contrast to the lightweight myford.

Not set on a new lathe, I have looked at a Harrison M300, but the good ones are a bit expensive when I want to add a DRO as most don't seem to have them fitted.

I'm thinking of getting another Lathe, I have a Myford Super 7 with a power cross slide, it's a nice machine, but I fancy a change.
I have a thread running about a couple of Warco lathes, but wondered what else you guys might suggest?
So lets say I have around £3k in the pot.
I'd like something a bit larger than the S7 but not necessarily massive.
A must have would be a 2 axis DRO
A decent spindle bore. Power feeds. Metric.
Coolant system & maybe a one push oiling system.
I think I'd prefer a 3 phase machine & inverter, but it's not a deal breaker.
Any thoughts guys and gals. (No prize for the first person to say don't change).

Do you really need the 1330 as opposed to the 1232? With these lathe familiies they are mostly the same bed with a slightly elevated head to make it seem 'bigger'. But it is just less ridgid because the bed is the same width and weight.

Variable speed & DRO = electronics = limitted life. Until recently I had an old 12in lathe in need of some TLC but fully functional after 110 years - how will yours be in 10 years.

Not necessarily

The 1232 seems quite good for the money, does it have the power cross feed do you know ?

What do you use ?

I wonder if any of you guys have anything to say about WM 290V-F VariableSpeed Lathe or the GH1330.
Seems the 290 comes with a DRO included which is a big plus but is slightly smaller.
Anybody out there faced this dilemma ?
What did you go for ?
Chris

I can find any reference to the GH1330 having a power cross slide ?

Does it have one ?

Any advantage in getting a 3 phase model and an inverter ?

Hi Chris,

We used to provide yellow and blue gels for students with dylexia to place over printed matter which simulated coloured backgrounds for the text. It worked well for many with that problem.

Terry

Yes the documentary I saw some years ago was with glasses that they gave some kids with one yellow and one blue tint. Very ingenious I thought.

Chris,

For obvious reasons, I am reluctant to insert snippets of HTML here; but I hope this will be safe ... I have added some quotation marks, which should invalidate the HTML punctuation.

Although I cannot explain how it got there; the mechanism for displaying your yellow background is easy to find.

If you look through the HTML for the page, you will find a "div style" instruction which says "="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 191); "

255, 255, 191 is the yelllow colour that you are "using" ... and this instruction appears to be exclusive to threads that contain your posts.

MichaelG.

Note:

in Safari, there is a "View Source" menu item

in IE, press "F12"

in Firefox there is, I believe, something rather clever.

That is interesting, over my head a bit but interesting.

What I don't really understand is why it's only ths site.

Why did it suddenly start.

I guess a workaround is for me to only ever quote another post (like this one)

Hi Michael,

Thanks for that link, it will be a very useful site for me. How marvellous is this forum where I can pick up all sorts of gems as well as modelling tips.

Hi Chris,

I wasn't criticising your yellow background I was just responding to your 'GRRR' and trying to make suggestions as I have not had the overlapping ads problem since the link problem was sorted and I don't have the editing problen you seem to have as I often have to edit my text without problem.

The comments about readability of the text on yellow background is interesting as that is how we used to make text more readable for students with dyslexia, i.e. use yellow or blue paper to print on. It worked well.(I have just had to edit several spelling mistakes with no problem)

Best regards

Terry

Terry

You are the second person who thought I was not best pleased about the comments on my Yellow problems .

I must be sending out the wrong impressions, sorry guys. Let me state I am so pleased anybody is taking any notice of me and my problems. So thanks for any comment, even the tounge in cheek ones smiley

What is strange is that I was having a conversation Thursday with another member and we were discussing delelopments in science and the coloured lenses helping people with Dyslexia came up. I never thought about my yellow text at the time but now you bring it up it makes some sense.

TBH I don't mind the yellow bit as I'm an old duffer (too smiley)
What really hacks me off is the loss of text.

Hi cris,

In IE, try

Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Browsing/Automatically recover from page layout errors with compatibility mode Ouch!

You can also add model-engineer.co.uk to the list under

Tools/ompatibility view settings/

Or for a test, set compatibility mode from Tools/ompatibility View:

Hope that helps.

Thanks but if I can I'd rather not run a microsoft product on my mac if I can avoid it.

I find they are so intrusive. I wonder if the next update to this software version might fix the problem as it's very annoying. I am trying to find some clues on the interweb.

I may go into the applestore tomorrow to see if I can get some help

Chris

I have lost a great link exposing UK charities sadly.
What stuck in my mind was the lady who runs a donkey charity that advertises on tv.
She pays herself something like £102k out of an income of £160k and only about 2% finds it's way to an actual donkey !!
