Kevin I had the same problem with an RDG Dixon tool holder when I had my ML7.
When you speak to RDG they will almost certainly tell you that the toolholder will only accept a shank of about 6mm! (I may be a mm or so out after all it was a few years ago). This is fine but a heavier shank will give you more tool rigidity.
If you check their website you will find that they do now offer a 10mm tool with a section milled out to allow it to fit into the toolholder and drop the tip to the level you require.
I now have a Myford 254S, and that came from Myford with a genuine Myford Dixon Toolholder, and that is a much more versatile piece of kit and allows full use of 10mm and 12mm tools.
I believe that they also offer a "genuine" Myford toolholder now so perhaps, if you explain the situation fully, they may do an exchange. |

Neil, if you mean that your bar dia is exactly .3125. Plus 0, minu 0 then it follows that it will not enter a .3125 hole, drilled, reamed or bored unless the hole is oversize.
A "stiff push fit" would indicate a hole that may actually be .005 larger than the bar. Remember a 1" peg will not go into a 1" hole as it is technically an interference fit.
Having said that your advice on sizes etc is very good advice.....however remember again that you may need to adjust for different metals and the condition of your reamers. |

I am sorry to come to come in at such a late juncture but I have only just seen this posting.
Before getting too hung up on the error being highlighted by running a clock along the length of the test piece, I think we should take a step backwards: -
(1) How old is this ML7?
(2) What condition is it in? By this I mean the slideways, gib's, backlash etc etc
(3) What size is the test piece? Length and diameter
(4) What type of cutting tool is being used and what condition is it in?
(5) What difference is there in the diameter along the bar length?
(6) Assuming an original error of .004 along a 12" length, now reduced to .002 alomg the same length, what error are you expecting?
(7) The bed in the zone in front of the headstock is almost certainly worn significantly more than the tailstock end, has this been carefully checked?
Sorry to labour that little lot, and I guess given a few more minutes I could find another half a dozen imponderables, but it occurs to me that we need to establish the realistic level of accuracy that is expectec. Is it in fact beyond the remit of such an elderly machine?.........incidentally please don't be offended by that remark.
Finally and perhaps crucially, what sort of work is going to be produced on the machine in question, and to what tolerances? After all if there is to be a predominance of short components produced to diameters of plus or minus .004" then does it matter at all. If absolute precision is required then is this the right machine, or should secondary processes be used for finishing.....such as grinding?

Good evening.
If you read the list of people on the message board at the bottom of the page, you may at times see the name MadMike.
Well for what it is worth, that is me. I live in Leicestershire. Retired, ex-toolmaker (many decades ago I might add) and subsequently senior manufacturing management and director roles in both medium and large (very large) companies. My passion is restoring and riding old motorbikes, and I have a collection of them.
I also have a Myford 254S, which I use to make parts for my bikes and my daughters. It is a very late Myford recon, having been sold by them in September/October 2010 to a friend of mine in Leicester. He sadly passed away very suddenly and I obtained the lathe still on its delivery castors and totally unused along with a huge amount of new tooling.
If I see any queries from anybody and think that I can help them, then I most certainly will try if that is OK with everybody else.
