Thanks JES and others, I now have the info I need.

Hi John

thanks for your reply. I am building a boiler for a Juliet. Along with the set of drawings I am following the guidance in a 1947 ME article. LBSC keeps referring to previous articles, rather than repeating himself. He refers to the Heilan Lassie article for the method of joining the boiler tube to the wrapper with a butt-strap. I am not building the Heilan Lassie boiler.

Regards

I'm looking for a copy of the 1946 (I think) ME article on building the boiler for LBSCs Heilan Lassie. Any assistance or help with this would be welcome.

thanks

Thread: Juliet boiler
14/06/2015 18:27:27

Hi Neil

thanks for your reply. This is the article that I have. I had a chat with the boiler inspector yesterday and we agreed that plan A is to try to find a tried and tested design. There are a number of suppliers that sell boiler material kits for Juliet, I guess that the material kits must be supplied "to plan", and from some of the images I've seen these use tube rather than sheet. I may try to have a chat with some of these.

I am currently building a 3 1/2" Juliet and am starting to think about the boiler which I plan too build myself. The old ME article (1947) describes a boiler that is formed from a flat sheet. I have seen several examples of Juliet boilers that are constructed using a seamless copper tube, which is the method I would prefer to use. I am looking for a plan for the boiler constructed this way. Any clues as to where I might buy one would be helpful.

Thanks

Thread: Help on key for 4-jaw chuck needed
29/12/2014 13:20:33

I made a second chuck key for mine out of a bit of odd stock I had lying around, and it's been fine. it might be just me but I find two chuck keys essential for setting and making fine adjustments, loosening and tightening opposite jaws at the same time.

Thread: DRO setup for a mini lathe
11/11/2014 21:44:48

Hi steven

i fitted DROs to my SIEG SX2 minimill. Totally transformed if for me. Highly recommended. There are some pics in one of my albums. Cover them to protect them from swarf. I didn't and have had to replace the x axis after about 18 months as I got swarf in it. I have Perspex cover on it now , fixed with Velcro so,it's easy to remove. You are right, space is tight, and would recommend a remote display as you may have difficulty reading the displays on the DROs themselves. Mine are tucked away.

Thread: metal lathe

Welcome Terry.

I was I a similar position to you @ 3 years ago. I bought a new Chinese lathe and don't regret it. I considered a used lathe but wasn't confident that I would know what was a good or bad one, or if I had the skills to put things right if I had a problem. One more comment, join a club. You will find that you will get all the help advice they you need.

Thread: Juliet build diary
01/07/2014 21:50:43

Hi Dan

I have the same plan with the lubricator, and have bought the same size lubricator and plan to mount. With the coupling stud and another couple of screws. I've finished the buffer beams and have fitted the brackets and fitted the frames. I spent some time at the weekend and made and fitted the weigh bar bearings. I'm working on the horn blocks next. I'll try to post some photos tomorrow. Keep the updates going. I'm interested in you boiler comments as I plan to build my own.

Hi Brian

I'm building a Juliet as a first loco, and have gone for laser cut frames. They have made progress easier. I joined a club a few months ago and am enjoying it. I'm reasonably new to the hobby and perhaps had the same concerns. I think you will find that clubs have members with a range of interests and abilities. Everybody has been welcoming and helpful. Don't wait until you start the boiler, join now. I have taken advice from the buffer beams up!

Thread: NUTOOL NT-14F 5 SPEED DRILL PRESS
28/06/2014 22:02:31

As per Les's comments. I have a similar drill press with a thumb screw on the hrs that lockers the motor mounting plate against a spring. I release this and the pull the motor forward. I can the. Move the belt across the pullys. Push the motor away and re tighten the screw.

I probably use the z axis most!

Hi Howard

i'm interested in details of your rpm meter if your happy to share??

Drilling, tapping, making the brackets and I also cut the end of the x axis scale.

12/06/2014 23:14:15

Hi Murray

They came from arc. The fitting was pretty straightforward . Except the lack of a guard on the x axis. I would have liked to have fitted it on the back of the table but it was tight and cut down the travel on the y axis.
