Thread: Can I?
04/04/2012 21:30:07

Dear all

Thanks for your advice and comments. No point in asking for them and then ignoring the. I plan to change the material to steel to add some mass. I'm not going to try to add weight to the original aluminium design. I want to keep as close to the plan as possible as I'm trying to copy an original flywheel. However I'm not sure if I'm a "filer" or a "fabricator", I have a foot in both camps at the moment dont know

Jason

Thanks for you comments. There are 4 spokesn If you click on the image it open the original image, well it does on my pc. I'm hoping the mass will be ok as the original design had a diecast flywheel. My logic is that If it works great. If I cock it up then it's £6 of ally not £20 of brass, and I'll hopefully detemine the best method the make it. As per you comments I think it will be lots of filing.

Bob

Dear all

A bit more advice please. Can I make the flywheel in the picture from an aluminimum round in a lathe without a rotary table?? The image below is a bit rough, but clearer if viewd from my album.

Thanks in expectation

I finally resolved my parting tool holder query yesterday. The supplier replaced my SIEG tool post with a SOBA tool post. It seems a lot more solid. I had to bore the base out a bit to fit the SIEG spindle, which was the first time I used my face plate. I had to remove the safety guard to enable the face plate to rotate. I then had to remove it's mounting spindle to allow the bolt heads on the clamps to clear. I didn't need to bypass the shut down microswitch, whih allows the lathere to run with all this taken off. Guess I'll leave it all off now.

Thanks for all the info. I have Google info and loads of Photos, some quite detailed which will help no end. From the info from Terryd I discoved that the original was know as a MESCO engine after the Manhattan Electric Supply Company. I found a copy of an advert, with no date showing 3 three sizes, the largest having a 3 1/2" fly wheel a was 7" long. One search took me to a copy of the July 1931 Pratical Mechanics Magazine. I couldn't find any MESCO engine info, but the Americans sure know how to put a magazine together!! See the link below. Thanks again all for the replies.

Thread: Er 32 Collets ?
04/03/2012 20:06:48

I'm currently considering the same. I was kind of leaning towards a chuck with 3MT to fit the taper in the headstock. My thinking being that this would be more flexible if I changed machines at some time. I had not considered David's point , with a back plate holder I will be able to use it to hold small stock as well as milling cutters. Now leaning the other way ................ Thanks David

Thanks for the link CB, this is exactly the end result I have in mind. I would like to scratch build though rather than buy a kit. The finish on these looks really good, so perhaps a kit.........

Thread: New "Kid" on the block

Hi Bob
I too am a new boy to the hobby. Perhaps this is a Bob thing? I've had some excellent feedback and advice from the forum Jedi. I've started a very basic vertical engine. There are some pictures in my photo album. Even something this basic (in comparison to some projects on the site) has provided a steep learning curve. I've had to gather tooling, materials and practical skills, all of which I'm finding very enjoyable. So if I can offer one small piece of advice it would be plan to learn to walk before you try to run, and pick a project that is achievable .

Thanks for the recent posts. I will admit I'n now very curious re. Chris's
tangential parting tool. I've added some photos that I've received from SIEG which seems to convert it into a 1/2" square tool holder??

An update on the vertical slide.......
After a couple of tweaks I managed to fit the slide to my cross slide. I guess it was designed for a machine with the T slots running in the opposite direction to mine. This left an overhang over the front. Even with my inexperience this did not look good. I decided to make an adaptor plate to move it back. I've added some photos to my album. I've used it for the first time the other evening in making a cylinder for my first model project, and all seems good.. Thanks for all the advice with this.

Thanks Chris
Last resort is to mill out the holder to take a standard 5/8" tool. I'm not going to Ally-Pally. I'm new to this and have not been to a show. There is a show advertised at the Bath and West show ground in March. I plan to visit this and am looking forward to a rummage, and hopefully some show deals.

An update on my tool holder. After a couple of emails and a link to my forum post, Daisy from SIEG has identifed the tool holder as one of their's, and advised me that a I need a 14mm x 2mm parting tool. They to not supply these, but she assures me that they they should be "easy to find in this country".

I've had a bit of a google and can't come up with one. Any suppler suggestions?

I've asked them for a uk supplier and part number.

Disappointingly, after a couple of emails I've not received any response at all from Axminster, where I bought it.

Thanks for the advice all. The tool holder came from Axminster, and I believe is a SIEG product. I have e mailed both for their comments, and will update my post when I get a reply. Preference at present would be to look at modifying the holder. I think it will stand removing a couple of mm of the bottom of the tool slot. It will then hold a standard 5/8 blade.
